HINDQUARTERS: SWEDISH VALLHUND

HINDQUARTERS

Swedish Vallhund Appearance Photograph[Standard - Well-angulated, well bent stifles and low hocks, thighs strongly muscled Legs  well boned]

Breeders are advised to beware of the Vallhund with too much angulation. This can effect the thrusting power of the hind movement and make it unbalanced. It is easy to detect as the dog stands and moves with feet inclined inwards (pigeon toed).

The Vallhunds rear end should be almost squared off. They should be straight normal on the rear legs as shown in the first dog in the following diagram.

TAIL

[Standard — If present, length not exceeding 4 ins (10 cm) when adult. Carried horizontally or slightly downwards. may be raised at attention but never higher than the level of back. Puppies born with tails may be docked]

Over 50 percent of Swedish Vallhunds are born without tails or with only a very short stub of a tail. These stub tails should not exceed 4 ins (10 cm) in length and ideally be carried horizontally or slightly downwards, but never higher than the level of the back. Vallhunds born with tails have usually been docked so as to not exceed 4 ins (10 cm) as per the standard.

Nowadays, Some breeders are choosing not to dock the tails on puppies born with tails. These long tails exhibit a variety of tail carriage including the Spitz tail which is curled over the back. Dogs with full tails or undocked tails should not be penalised
