PEST
& DISEASE PROBLEMS

Black
Spot On Roses: The name says it all; the first
symptoms are little black spots. The
spots will increase in size and number as the disease takes hold. In more severe cases the leaves will turn
yellow and fall off.
Tips for
Customers: Water roses in the early morning and avoid watering the foliage,
as leaves should be kept dry. When
watered in the evening they stay wet for longer and are more prone to
disease.
Control:
Remove affected foliage, in cases on severely infected plants remove them and
dispose of them thoroughly. A spray
of copper oxychloride should follow pruning.
Use products containing the active ingredient Triforine.
This is
meant as a guide and professional advice should be sought.
Aphids are small sucking insects and are usually
found on the new growth. These little
critters were found on my roses however they can appear on a variety of
plants.
They are the most common of rose pests and while there are hundreds of
varieties they are usually green, brown or reddish in color.
Ladybirds
are natural enemies of the aphid, as are their larvae and hover fly larvae.
A hard
spray with the hose will knock them off and they will won’t be able to
return. You can easily remove them
by stroking the tips with fingers YUCK!
For
Chemical control spray with Dimethoate or Maldison.

Rust on
Geraniums
The
above pictures illustrate the effect of Rust on the back of a geranium
leaf. Yellow areas develop on the
upper leaf surface with brown, black or orange pustules immediately below on
the reverse side. Not only is this
unattractive but can cause leaves to wither and fall of prematurely and in
severe cases the plant can wither and die.
Control:
Dust with sulfur or spray with wetable sulfur or with Zineb. Check your local nursery for a good
fungicide. Tip: enquire after Baycor.
Dollar
Spot in Lawns: I believe a member recently came across this in
his lawn. It is a fungal disease
usually no more then 6 cm in diameter, or the size of a 50-cent coin. The disease is common in grass grown with
low nitrogen fertility.
Control:
Firstly aerate your lawn; this can be done with a fork tool or with aerating
equipment. Provide adequate nitrogen and moisture levels,
minimise thatch levels. Fungicide
sprays that help control Dollar spot include copper oxychloride and Mancozeb with an should be used with an
approved wetting agent.
A suggestion I read a while ago was that from an ABC Queensland
Publication with interviewer Tom Watt.
