Doesn't seem to be any folks here making mention to owning road Motorcycles.

But if there is, is anyone sitting on a Suzuki 1250 Bandit or a Yamaha XJR1300 or a Honda CB1100. (Late model or new)
If so, I would interested to know your experiences.
Guess this ain't gona draw many replys, but you never know what ones does other than pull a cord on a 160 honda.

Someone on here a while back had some nice bikes and some under resto. Can't think who it was though. I've got a Honda CB250 here (possibly with 400 motor ? but I haven't verified that) but still haven't done anything about getting my licence for it.

Paul does it have dual front disc brakes or single if it has dual then i think you will find it's a 400 and someone put the side plates of the 250 onto a 400 so they could get away with riding it while on P's from memory the front brakes and the sticker on the side plates were the main visible differences between the 2

it will also be on your engine number paul i belive . brother used to play around with them a lot , and i think you will find in the engine number it will either start or finish with the the engine size being the numbers number ... 250 or 400 ....

Front disc brakes are irrelevant. CBR250r Had single disc, CBR250RR twin disc.
A 400 motor will not go into a 250 frame without major re-engineering and bracing of the frame - Engine mounts differ in locations. 400 runs a larger airbox also that means the tank would need to be modified.
Engine codes are rellevant in so far as the number can be matched to the model if you google up honda engine numbers. Easiest way however is to look on the right side of the barrels. There will be cast numbers of the displacement of either 249cm3 or 399 cm3
Also look at the compliance plate - Only a few CBR250's were officially imported into Australia by Honda the rest are grey imports and will have a compliance plate from Southside motorcycles - The plate will be marked with the relevant details along with the model code. NC28 and NC29 are 250, from memory.

As for Gazzas original post...they are all great bikes but it depends on what you want out of it. The Bandit is for hooligans, The FJR is very refined and touring oriented....as for the Honda well I'm not a fan of Honda.
Consider also the ZRX1100. Alot of bike for a really good price. Bulletproof engine and no nonsense engineering.

Aido, I think they're going back a little further than the models u mentioned.
If u can dig up CB's from the 70's, I think that might be what they r on about.
I think Suzuki GSX 250/400 also falls into this cat?
Cheers Fred.

The Superdream! Either way. The displacement is cast into to barrels.
CB250n Superdream was my first bike......Partly why I hate Honda LOL

I have a 75 RD350 cafe racer under construction, and 2 RGV250's. One is my hack {when I put it back together with the barrels I just ported) and the other is an original Pepsi that I will restore.

I'd go the Bandit 1250 personally, I looked after a mates for 6 months while he was travelling OS. Awesome and very capable bike, (for a four stroke) but I am a hooligan

The retro Honda CB1100 was in the equation 3 wks ago as I used to ride a CB900F factory full fairing job and would love to get on a 2011 remake. But some stupid designer team from a great land with short distances but a stupid 14.6ltr tank on it. So that is no no now.

The Bandit 1250 half fairing is a magic bike having the best value of all time at $11,400 driveaway, being very importantly thousand and thousand below the overs. $12,000 with ABS.

Value for money is still hard to believe that Suzuki can make enough profit on it. Plus the 2011 bandit looks Hot and has very good write ups. The XJR Yam 1300 is a more refined machine but much dearer, but now has my reduced attention. Having seen/sat on and read about the bandit together with it's wallet friendly price.

The kwaka well I haven't walked into a Z shop yet, my brother used to ride a black Z500 many moons ago so I have respect for them.

Some triva,
The skinnier santa on the left is me in both pictures from a Melb MRA Salvation Army Toy Run as I was the lead bike for the run as I owned a red & white Bolder 900 (Flying Coke Can). Me mate and I voluntered to be santa's and had the police escort in with the troops behind.

The appealling young lady is Jennifer Lee from the Jennifer Lee Band that used to play for the MRA functions & concerts in the MRA H/Quarters which was then in Fitzroy.
Ohh, so much fun it was then, as I hunt down a new muscle machine that won't ruin a middle aged man's wrists like some sports tourers would re seating position.

I also had the CB400N new in grey with blue graphics which I bought from Footscary Honda with the dual twin front disks. It was a reliable easy go machine that I had for 5 months and traded for the CB900 for two reasons.
I was struggling to keep up with pack on mountain or curvy rds and one day whilst enroute to Phillip Island coming over a hill crest. The wind shear that greeted me almost sent me into the paddocks on a wet road, so a heavier machine was ordered from P/Stevens the next week.
But for city use or a trip down to torquay and for learners it would have been and was a dream compact bike.

The toy run pics. take me back, I was heavily involved with the MRA myself back in the early ninetys. As for your original post I'd go the Bandit but then I'm a bit biased, having owned a GSF1200S Bandit since 2004, Always found it the best all round bike, good tourer, Canberra to Phillip Island is easy in 8 hrs. great on gravel roads (for it's size and weight), can keep up with all but well ridden sports bikes through the twisties, a good rider on a sports bike will beat a good rider on a Bandit but I reckon an average rider on a Bandit will beat an average rider on a sports bike, and Suzuki have left just enough mongrel in that old engine to let you know it's linage. There was a time when just about ever stunt rider in the world used Bandits, a lot of wheelie schools in the UK and US used them too, because they were so bullet proof and easy to play with. Oh and they are a bargain too, truly great value for money.
I've been procrastinating about selling mine for the past year or so, I should really get a Dual Sport and go see a bit more of this great country.

Today I woke up and thought why am I procrastinating about getting a Motorbike again after 20yrs away from scene.
Asked the misses again and got a 51% get it response (just enough to save the marriage). After visiting the doctors to get my stitches removed from my head re that head accident last week.
I walked into the Vroomm shop and bought a new Suzuki 1250cc Gloss Black Bandit with a half fairing. For delivery onroad this Friday.
Gona re roster Thursday arvo out to buy new riding gear to suit, including Kevlar Jeans.

I'm a defensive rider who treat all other vehicles on the road as Borg units from the collective.

Thanks to all that posted and created great dicussion, loved the green kwaka posted.

And I'm 52, so I won't being doing this stuff, but she has some take off grunt.

ian,

Still can't believe I did it as it all happened so quick since waking up this morning.
Had to ring my wife just as she got to work to get the 51% approval. The dealer gave a print out of the break down of the bike and onroad costs. I offerred a 1G deposit and he didn't want money as a deposit, just a gentlemans hand shake.
You just have to love the country way of doing things.

Nice one Gaz.

No doubt everyone has said it to you already but be careful. Born again riders are in the same category as learner riders for danger to themselves. Whilst you have a wealth of experience on the roads your skills and reactions on the road with a motorcycle will be a little rusty. I'm not being a smart ass but offering some advice that you will find useful to sharpen up those old skills and assist you in staying on two wheels. I rode everyday for 11 years before I got a car license but at least once a month either alone or with mates we would go to a quite spot and practice hard braking, low speed manouvering, or hazard avoidance like they do in the learner licensing. Find a quite court or area in an industrial estate where you wont bother anyone and practice your braking, counter steering and get to know your bike intimately so that when you need to use these skills they come naturally.
Take care and enjoy it....
Even come along for a track day some day this summer. Track days are not all about lap records but just having an open track that you can take at your own pace. The beginers group is nothing more than slow road riding and gives you a safe environment to explore the handling of your bike.

Motorcycles....they are a hobby of mine - obviously. Did a track day 2 weeks ago and will be back again in the coming weeks.

http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo121/adrnlws/Picture084Largee-mailview.jpg

Also building this one this week... a little 125 2 stroke cafe racer for this summer. Also use it for getting around and delivering flyers LOL

Aido,
Thanks and your words of wisdom towards safety are just so true. I been getting told the same (repeatedly)from my 3yr older brother who never left the bike scene. He rides a heavy BMW tour with the lot.

Went for a easy/slow 260k ride to Walla/Jingellic from Wodonga on Wednesday and my ability to corner was nowhere the same as in days gone by. I even let a couple of cars go by to ease any pressure on me having a cage or two behind me.

Yesterday I arrived home at 4.30pm and there was light rain falling so I put the riding gear and rode around the rural streets around my house which are out of town on a hill side. Practiced braking and throttle etc on a damp greasy road to get the feel of the beast. Must say it griped well.
Plus I will not be taking my wife on board until I feel up to it and that could be for some time.
I have a mainly undeveloped light industrail estate at the foot of the hill near me beside the Hume freeway and I did practice in the wet there too. Just like you said too prior to your post.

Must say saftey is on the mind as I'm not as sharp as when I was younger, plus the beast is just a pure rocket and it's not even a Fireblade or the like.

Love the pictures your posting too, as I started on a 125 Honda Elsinore (spelling) road/trail bike when I was 17/9mths.

Lots to re-learn but it will come back.
Start by practising straight line hard braking using front and rear. Apply and squeeze...dont grab. Build your confidence and learn what you and the bike can do. Better to do it at 30-40kmh than 80-100.

Heres something to practise even when driving around town in the work ute - works the same for cars as it does for bikes. Train your eye to look at the vanishing point of the road... bad example but you get what I mean.
http://www.cvam-advanced-riders.co.uk/images/uploaded/images/Tips/convergence_point.jpg

You will always go where you look. Also by looking as far ahead and at the vanishing point you will be able to adjust your speed and anticipate what is coming.
Its not about being fast...we are all very fast in a straight line...its about being smooth and safe.
Have fun Gaz.....part of the fun is building your skills.

Now go and ask your brother about the "Chicken dance"...not taking the piss...it is a skill.

Glenn,

Next rainy day go to the bike shops, get some glossy catalogues. When you go to bed turn the bedside light on and look'n'read them.
If the misses doesn't question this activity, several weeks later, "bingo" one new 1250cc vrrooom machine in gloss black awaits your next ride. That's what I did.

I have the opportunity again to link up with old friends from me youthful touring days for 7days in the Alpine regions of NSW/VIC next week. Have already linked up 3 times since getting back on a machine and I'm going to hook up again just for a couple of days this time with boys, as basically the Apline Region is my backyard. No not for me, but those Classic Bikes are always so so good to see - enjoy it if your going.

I'm spewing at the moment as the group of blokes I tour with are currently on a 7 day ride across the NSW/Vic alpine region. Staying at quaint little country pubs as they zig zag all over the place.
But there trip over Hotham has been altered due to the bad fire up my fire.
Can't be with them due to so much work and 5 big all days jobs back logged for when it cools down a little. Least I get to join up on Saturday Night at the "Happy Valley Hotel" hotel on the Bright side of Myrtleford before they head back to Geelong.

Enjoy that Classic Bike show, shows like that always make us wish we had kept our first real bike. I wish I had kept my 900F2 Bolder with the red/white factory fitted fairing. Whilst not a classic bike, but a bike I loved so much and more than my curernt 1250 Bandit.

Niece has just flown in from Canada so we're looking to show her round.
Not so sure she'd be interested in the bike show but , u know, beaches penguins etc.
Maybe I could sneak off for a while, leaving the girls wherever.

Classic bikes r 25yrs+ & vintage 50yrs+ correct?
If thats correct Ive had a few in the classic cat.

It is a 1999 Triumph Adventurer 900. Almost the same as a Thunderbird but with different rear, longer forks and lower seat position. It was built for the US market.

Stunning Bikes Phil,

My bother had one in his early days, Always remember his sores and red stains on the front leg from trying to kick start it.

If you have more pictures and of the bike beside it, don't be afraid to upload them.

My old Bike which was called the Flying Coke Can by the boys.

Top section photo is outside Coles New World at Bathurst stocking up on grog to take back up to the mountain when the GP used to be held there. Thats me in the dark brown daks leaning on the grog. We were waiting for the ute we brought to the GP. A ute that was only meant to get there, carry grog and not come home.

I was very close to ordering a Bonneville T100 as I wanted some good ol classic styling with my new bike. But my riding group and brother talked me out of it, as they ride BMW GS1200 and with their style of riding they reckoned I would be left behind on the 4 to 5 day Alpine rides so I got this. Bugger me and I still can't keep up with them, but they have too many cheating electronic gadgets and panniers to lower the carried weight.
So I went for a modern muscle bike half fairing 1980's look at a cheap as chips price.

Yep the smoker is in good nick and looks the goods, especially on my big desktop screen.

Re my Brother's Boneville from the mid-late 70's, He had it serviced by a trumpy dealer in Brunswick back then who is not trading now.
They forget to put oil back into the black beast and after he picked it up he needed to ride back to Torquay, it seized up as he was passing through Geelong. They struck a deal with the dealer after some major hassle and he rode of on a near new Honda CB 350F. Which did look smick back then being a inline 4.

So now when I get me Bandit serviced due to warranty or when I picked up my 4 new lawn mowers or me 4 stroke outboard you know what I personally check.

Congrats Greenie on passing the test. :bike: :bike:

As the testing procedure taught you, ride defensively, watch out for the mobile phone users. Cage drivers these days are not always aware or alert to their surroundings.
With my machine, once I've head checked comprehensively I power up to get in front of the pack when I can.
My final motherly advise is put a Narva Plus 100 Halogen in the headlight to help you be seen.

Enjoy the ride, typing this makes me want to take my Suzuki GSF1250S out for spin after tomorrow mornings commercial mowing job I have.:bike:

Ian when your on the two wheel beast a rider has to treat every car as a scud missle aiming for the heat of your exhaust. You are in defensive mode with every car in range and some times its better to pull off the road if you see a Volvo. :bike:

I was at 4 way roundabout in Wodonga two weeks back in very light traffic conditions on my Bike.
A new Audi comes into the roundabout and engages the left turn blinkers and this car is on my right. I decided not to move forward on clutch slip as I couldn't see front wheel movement or her slowing down.
Bugger me the old female bat driving the shinny new black limo goes straight through the roundabout on her way to connect with the Hume Freeway with her left blinker happily binking away.
I would have been skittled and at fault having her on my right.

The only car drivers that are not out to get you are the real bike riders driving a car and it hard to know which ones they are.

ian
21-04-2013, 01:16 AM
Sorry Gary but I'm confused unless you were illegally overtaking her on the left in a one carriageway roundabout i don't see how you would have been in the wrong it's illegal to do a left turn from the right lane in a roundabout in Victoria unless it's signed as being permitted in which case it is only supposed to happen when the left lane is also signed as left turn only

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/home/safetyandrules/roadrules/roundabouts.htm

mind you it's virtually irrelevant who has right of way because hitting anyone or anything whether your in the right or wrong still causes just as much physical pain maybe just less financial

How majestic it would be to take that beautiful beast out for a supple ride down a nice meandering road and pull up at a roadside café for a cappuccino and wholemeal wrap. Even stopping one cnr further on at a nice local ordering a T-Bone Steak topped with mushrooms and battered country style chips. The unworn outer edges of the curved radial tyre that we are too chicken to lean the beast over enough on corners or whilst powering out to remove the visible unworn tyre edge.
