Thought I would start a thread favourite pics and tips for better pics. I think PaulG has experience in this field?Anyone else on here?
So post up your favourite pics ,ask for or post tips to make em better.
I'm just getting back into it seriously after using point & shoots for the digital years. I did a lot of film work in my younger days and had a second job working in a darkroom hand developing and printing.
New set up is a Canon 60D with the standard 18mm - 55mm and 55mm - 250mm EFS kit lenses. I have a couple of L series lenses on the way(it's all about the glass). Love the fact to that most DSLR's can shoot 1080HD video now so looking forward to playing around with that as well.

These are all off a point & shoot

Great pics courty I have only just bought myself a 600d twin lens kit. It takes great pictures. One thing I am having trouble with when taking video of say the kids running around in the yard they don't stay in focus if you know what I mean. I have a panasonic tz10 point and shoot and this doesen't happen with it. What am I doing wrong???? Paul might know but I think he is a nikon man?????

I haven't played with the video yet and I'm not sure about the 600D but I have read that the auto focus can be a bit slow for moving subjects in live view.Maybe try shooting your video through the viewfinder if you haven't already.

I don't have any experience with the newer DSLRs with video capability Mark (my cameras are 2006 vintage Nikon D200's) but I'd be checking the manual and seeing if there's an option for constant focus. Either that or you may have to manually focus the lens (if they have a manual focus option) in and out to keep focus.

For anyone wanting to improve their skills, no matter what level you are at, I can highly recommend the AusPhotography forum.

Disregard what I said earlier about live view, further research tells me that won't be your problem.
I got a Basic Controls DVD for mine by a company called Blue Crane Digital, they do them for all different models. So much easier than trying to read a manual the size of a phone book.
I know all the exposure,DOF stuff etc but there is a lot more to these new machines.

PaulG
25-06-2012, 05:37 PM
Just had a quick read of a couple of reviews and the manual. Make sure the camera's movie recording mode is set to full HD although you will need a large capacity, fast SD card. Zoom capability is from 3x to 10 x but focus is retained better closer to 3x. Similar to still-shots on a P&S camera you will get shake and blur on big zoom. It also said the movie mode (in auto focus mode) uses the central focus frame in the middle of the viewfinder as it's focus point. If your subjects are moving, as kids do, the focus will be hunting around going in and out of focus, which it sounds like is what you're experiencing. From what the manual said the best Auto Focus mode is Quick Mode, not Live Mode. There's also a list of things on p138 which can make focus difficult.

Also, some of the aftermarket manuals are worth purchasing as they cut through a lot of the rubbish in the factory manual, often having info that isn't included by the factory.
I bought a book years ago for my D200 similar to the one below for 600D and I learned a lot.

Unfortunately I dont have any photo's on the computer from it. Rolls and rolls of film, some still not developed. Can take a 1000 photo's but only a couple can end up being any good. I still have the camera in perfect condition.

Do you have a scanner on your printer Glenno? If they're A4 size or smaller you can scan them, save as a JPG file to Flickr or Photobucket etc or just upload them to the forum as you normally would upload a work pic via attachments.

Thanks for the advice guys. Some great photos guys, Paul I know something that you are good at, would be an easier way on the body to make a quid if you could get into it. I had a bit more bad news today seems my right knee is wearing out, also today had a cortisone needle in my right hip joint got to have one in my left bursa on Monday and still waiting for a date to have my hip arthroscopy, starting to think again about selling up but don't know what I could get into

PaulG

Not the best news for you Mark. I worry too about what I'd do if my body/illness got any worse. I have no Super, no insurance. I could sell my house and make a few dollars but once that's gone my family would be stuffed.

Would love to be doing photography full time but it's become a more cut-throat industry than mowing and gardening to be honest, especially since the advent of cheap DSLRs. I can take a decent pic using manual camera controls but I lose out when it comes to post processing which is where a lot of the wow-factor comes from these days. Never been great with computer programs.

I think you should like LR4 Glenn. I had LR2 and PS4 at one stage but for some reason found PS a bit easier to grasp.

For a lot of adjustments though most of my Photog friends around the place use LR. The full software for LR is about 1/7th the price of PS too at about $200.

If you end up buying the full program keep an eye out for this book from Scott Kelby. His books really help you make the most of the software.

If you want to get your hands dirty with some basic image processing, try Google Picasa. It has some standard features that are OK for most purposes. It's free.

When you're feeling more adept, try Gimp. It's free too. It lacks the automation of Photoshop, but at the price, it's a great skill-builder and had a heap of features. Some features are awkwardly implemented, but they work.

If you don't already run Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, other flavour), try it out. It has lower overheads than Windows so you can get more work out of an old machine at a lower cost. It does, however, come with somewhat of a learning curve. There is heaps of help out there on the 'net if you get stuck.

HTH.

Cheers - GardenGuy.

Here's one from yesterday. Not bothering to lug the big gear around much lately and snapped this one on a little Panasonic point and shoot on macro. Slight crop, contrast & saturation adjustments and a little sharpening.

Great Shot Paul I was trying to capture pictures of insects with my old point and shoot, ended up a bit blurry, love the clarity of yours.

A few I thought you might like. These were taken with an old (almost vintage now by digital standards) Nikon CoolPix 995. Cost me nearly $2k back in 2002, these days you can buy a camera with specs way over the Nikon's for about $250. Still got it, still takes great pics.

I've literally got 1000s of photos from a couple of trips to Europe and 7 years as a tour guide in Central Australia. All the night shots and sunrise/sunset shots were taken in auto mode with the camera mounted on one of those dinky little flexible tripods. I set the 10 secs timer, stand back and let the camera do it's thing. It's an awesome camera for it's day but only 3.4MP so what I can do with the pics is pretty limited. They print well up to A4 and any bigger they get washy and pixelated. One of these days I'll get a digital SLR and get back into it.

Get the 5d and a gopro..... I was surfing up Nelson Bay way today One Mile beach, took the gopro in the water for the first time, I can not get over the quality of picture and video this thing takes. It did fog a little but I have found out you should put anti fog strips in the housing. I have a mate who does a lot of surf photography, and he is using a 70d with a good lens 400mm I think. He takes really good photos with it. Oh yeah a bad thing that happened today, I had a wave on my brothers brand new 8 foot mal, and this chick, a total kook paddled for the wave I was on, and pushed her board in front of me, she didn't drop in just pushed the board in my way, I bailed but I couldn't avoid it and dinged the rail of the mal. It was a quite trip home in the car, funny thing he filmed it all on the gopro, so you can tell it wasn't my fault

Reminds me when a lunar eclipse was on a few years ago. I studied up on how to best photograph it. Apparently set up camera on tripod, set it to Manual focus at infinity and snap away.
I pushed buttons until a big M came up on the screen and figured I had it sorted.

Had the exact problem and having a whipper snipper IT geek running his own business in the family to bounce it of. You just down load Office 2010 and for free. Whilst still keeping the payed for (but very cheap, but that can be for free) Office Pro 2013 as you have to have that with Windows 8.
I just use the Office 2010 for picture editing.
For $5 you can use windows 8 as window 7 or flick back to windows 8 or back to windows 7 using the downloadable $5 program that enables the use of Office 2010. Bewdtiful
The program is "Stardock Start 8" you can trial it for a month, then pay $5 to keep it running as a once of payment and along the journey of using it you get includes free updates enhancements or security.

Best $5 dollars you will ever spend except for 5 potatoe cakes from the Fish 'n' Chip shop on a Winter's day.

Hi Gazza,
I am over downloading program applications saved on my pc, that Gimp program installed a heap of added junk that took me an hour to remove, then today I realized it had interfered with my virus protection, I had to re install that, all good now. As you know windows 8 not only runs like a normal pc but also comes with APP capability like an Ipad, so I have downloaded the Photo Editor app, its free and has heaps of functions that do not take up any space as it is web based, also because it is an app there is no problem with bugs. from now on whenever I want a program I am going to look at apps first..

Just got the new Cannon 70d and love it...hooks up to the iphone so can makes shutter/iso/aperture changes as well as fire from the iphone avoiding the camera shake ..also phone allows you to send pics from where you are shooting ...
playing around with the lenses from landscape to standard and up to 300 mm lenses...just got into the nd filters which give interesting effects..
the biggest thing i have gleaned is using lightroom for the editing which makes the pics a bit better..10 bucks a month ...

I was thinking of replacing my old canon 300D slr thinking that the price of the entry level body may have gone down but hasn't gone down much at all. The price of other cameras has gone down and you can get some pretty decent cameras for not much money but not so with SLR's. Once you buy the lens you are stuck with either nikon or canon and I think they know it too.

I've jumped ship from Canon to a Nikon D750. The change of control positions can be frustrating but the jump from crop sensor to full frame isn't.

Never used a full frame so can't comment, but it doesn't matter on what camera you use so much, but how you utilise all its' capabilities. When I was driving cabs I saw a lot of people with high end cameras with them on Auto mode (WTF?). Good composition is the first thing you should get your head around, and then how to best use the available light. A good flash is pretty well a necessity plus a tripod. Intervalometers open up a huge range of possibilities too and are inexpensive. I have a Canon 7D and like the more compact size over the full frame bodies, just my preference. Have the EFS 17-55mm plus just bought the EFS 10-22mm wide angle. Would love the 70-200mm but at $2500 I'll have to keep saving for a while. Enjoy your new toy!!!!!

Would love some advice from the Photographers about settings for shooting Sunsets, I'm a total noob to DSLR

See the below pic to the naked eye the foreground looked amazing with the light glistening of the eucalyptus it was a very vibrant green. Using a longer exposure I could get the foreground in focus and colour but the sun and sky was overexposed

Any advice on what sort of settings I should use?

Thanks

BGS
Get yourself a set of graduated neutral density filters. They allow you to get correct exposure on the foreground and not blow out the sun/sky. Alternatively you can muck around with HDR(high dynamic range) take 2 or 3 shots exposing the different areas correctly then stack the shots.

Just upgraded from my old pentax(that barely got used anymore) to a canon 70D. Should have done it a while ago.
It's much better for what I shoot now and has sparked the interest again for general photography.

I picked up the 70D just over 12mnths ago. Great bit of gear after my old Pentax km.
I also got the 50mm 1.8 as the 1.2 was just a bit exxy for me.
Lashed out and rented a 70 - 200 over Easter for the Bendigo festival, the young bloke does lion dancing, whole reason I purchased.

I'll throw some photos up next week.

Ok Geoff, first one was 2 sec at f16, second was 3 secs at f16, third was 10 secs at f18 and fourth was 8 secs at f18. All shots were at 10 mm as well and used manual focus set on the show rides before the fireworks started. After loading the raw files I use the Canon program that came with the camera (Digital Photo Professional) to tweak them a bit to make the sky black and hide the smoke by using a combination of brightness, shadow and contrast settings. Also pump up the sharpness and saturation to desired levels, but not too much. Have a Vello Intervalometer that plugs into the side of the camera, great for fireworks, night sky shots, time lapse etc plus a Manfrotto tripod.

Just had a dance comp on Saturday, but didn't do any photography this time round, but here's one of our friends from last year. Was using the EFS 17-55mm at 55mm, f5.6 @ 160th sec, ISO 640 and bouncing the flash (580 EX II Speedlight) off the ceiling with the light bounce card out. They got this one blown up on canvass for their lounge wall, looks awesome. Real tricky shooting moving targets, but it really helps to know the dance routine to know where they will be in advance and I'm talking less than a 1/4 of a second window.9170 And for Geoff, I always shoot fireworks at ISO 100

Yeah I was thinking of that lens, it would be better for surf shots, but the smaller one would be more versatile, with the v8s coming here at the end of the year I think it may be good for that. As long as I can get close enough with the surf shots. What do you think?

Thanks troppo I will give them a call.

they're a good lens apparently, with a solid tripod you could try a 1.4x adapter if you wanted extra reach

also, the 150-500 come up 2nd hand pretty often.....
