g'day hru195, I've got the same problem :i dunno: Our little HRU195 has been a gem, but it's running like s.h.i.t at the moment. The air filter is good, but it seems to sound like it's running with the choke on. I spoke with a guy at a dealership today & he reckons that the choke may be stuck on???? Does anyone knowif this is possible, given that the choke seems to be just pulling the throttle open further???

follow the cable down to the lever and make sure the choke isnt on
clean out your fuel bowl and tank may have some water in it or condensation
if you filled up with petrol from a near empty can usually does it

Just think back to when it first happened generally that will tell u something

check to make sure cable hasnt moved see where ive circled the pic at the end of the cable is a metal end just have it flush with the left hand side of the tightner plate and that will be about right spot

Also if u want to lift the revs take the plate of it has two bolts to undo behind that is a spring drop it down to the lowest hole and that will lift the revs sometimes you may have to replace the governer spring gets a but tired .

like us all

probably dont make sense but hey i tried

THIS IS THE WAY TO ADJUST THE GOVERNER TO TAKE THE SLACK OUT OF THE LINKAGE

Turn the engine off, Put the throttle
lever to the HIGH position. Loosen the
pinch bolt nut on the governor arm a
turn or two; just enough that the arm will
move on its shaft.

With one hand, move the governor
arm so that the throttle plate of the
carburettor is wide open. With your other
hand, use smallish pliers that’s
why there is a flat on the shaft to turn
the shaft in the same direction. Hold
everything in that position and tighten
the pinch bolt.

You’ve just taken all the slack out of the governor linkage.

Recheck the choke, idle and maximum RPM
and you’ve done all the adjusting
you can do.

GOVERNOR
Adjustment:
1) Remove the control protector
2) Loosen the governor arm nut. Be sure that the carburetor
throttle valve is fully open (fully to the left).
3) Rotate the governor arm shaft fully to the right (governor
fully closed position), and retighten the governor arm nut.
TORQUE: 10 N.m (1.0 kgf.m, 7 lbf.ft)
4) Check to see that the governor arm and throttle valve move
freely.
5) Check the maximum engine speed and confirm that it is
correct.

HOW MANY OF YOUR HAVE EVER CLEANED OR CHANGED A SPARK ARRESTER

Not many i bet Hondas are such a good engine poetry in motion .
BASED ON MODELS HRU 196 216

The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to
maintain its efficiency.
Cleaning:
A) Remove the two 6 mm self-locking nuts.
B) Remove the muffler protector, two protector packings,
identification plate, muffler and spark arrester.
Be careful not to damage the wire mesh of the spark
arrester.
c) Check for carbon deposits around the exhaust port and
spark arrester. Clean if necessary, with a wire brush.
D) Replace the spark arrester if there are any breaks or tears.
E) Install the spark arrester and muffler in the reverse order of
disassembly.
TORQUE: 10 N.m (1.0 kgf.m, 7 lbf.ft) :wave-hi:

Not sure on the honda's but i know the briggs n strattons are renowned 4 wear in the heads & get excessive valve to seat clearance , the only way 2 tell is with a compression test followed by another with a little oil sprayed in the cylinder with an oil can
if there is no increase there's a valve problem
the cheapest way to fix an old briggs to get a few more months is to grind a little off the top of the valve so it will seal in the the cylinder chamber etc
hope this is a help to someone out there !!! it kept my brothers rideon going on his farm 6 more mths till the crank seal went ;frosty;

ENGINE HUNTING
Hondas
Have you been having trouble with hunting, reving up and down consistantly,,wont idle etc
A very important point that is often
overlooked is low cylinder compression Check that first.

Then check the fuel quality and quantity
allways use a conditioner in your fuel .
Then check that the mechanical governor
mechanism is free in operation, adjusted
correctly and with all springs and
linkages fitted in their correct locations see previous post by Admin .

Mines 2 years old engines average, chasis just about had it, I keep blowing holes ranging from the size of a fifty cent peice, to a 10c
I just use it on crap lawns now. been using my 196 for most jobs now, I think you get a better cut with the lighter mower,

Yes
Gear box seal went.
A tip for the bald honda drive wheels ( if not mentioned elsewhere ) When at the tip pick up old mountain bike tyres wrap around honda wheel self tap onto bald wheel.Trim off excess around edges, wheels spend less time spinning more traction.
CAUTION if you like the wheel spin to make turning on slopes easier it will dig up the grass.

Cheers
