Cape Bridgewater/Portland. Really pretty coastline down there. Probably the nicest beach in Victoria. Heaps to do and look at, and well placed for day trips to Mount Gambier and Warnambool.

Gippsland Lakes area or further round the coast eg Mallacoota [ ie. Republic of Far East Gippsland :) ] is significantly warmer than Melb or the west coast.

Kyneton is great. Had an extra long Queens Birthday weekend there. Daylesford is an easy drive from there.

Bright is another great spot. Beechworth, Chiltern and the Alpine region are an easy drive.

Do the pubs in Melbourne still close when the sun goes down?

No, thats definitely Sydney. I lived up their for about 10 months, and there is no live bands in any of the locals up there. Sydney has far too many noise curfews in the suburbs. Melbourne has next to none for the time being.

That whole region has had alot of growth over the last few years. Kyneton, Romsey etc have housing estates popping up everywhere. I always visit Bourkies Bakery in Woodend when I head up that way. Best Vanilla slices in the county I reckon. They have actually won the title for such over a number of years too. Yummm.

while they have good vanilla slices, go a little further up the calder to Malmsbury bakery for a sausage roll. if they are what they were only 2-3 years ago, well worth the extra 15 mins drive

I've spent so much time around the kyneton/blackwood area over the last 15 or so years that I think its time to try somewhere different.

Daylsford .....I went there once, can't stand the place.

Grampians area is sounding good. Havent been out that way since I was a kid.

What's wrong with Daylsford Glenn ?
Its a gardeners paradise.
Spectacular views from the mountain top drive through botanical garden & the autumn colour around lake Jubilee is hard to beat.

Ok .. leaving on tuesday . Going to Dadswell bridge at the top east end of the grampians to start with then heading down to portland before heading over to port fairy. Bit of an unplaned road trip, so things could change. Really looking forward to heading off. I love just driving for endless hours through unknown territory and stopping when something catches my interest. Taking about 8 different fishing rods and reels just to cover whatever comes along and a tent just in case. Cant wait ...

Hey Cranbourne Lawnmowing, I have interment knowledge of where to fish in the Portland area, land based or boat. Has the best land based fishing in the South West. I lived there for 10 years and fished more than I was home. Be sure to visit Cape Bridgewater, just out of Portland (about 15 minutes) Has alot to see there. If you book the seal tour, they pick you up from the beach in a huge surf dingy, and cruise out to the point and drive into a large cave full of seals. They play all round the boat and I recommend having a look. There is a beach on the way out there which is a great surf fishing beach called Shelley's beach. Good for Gummies at night and Salmon during the day. The breakwater in town is good for big sharks at night, (seven gill, Thresher, schoolies, ) and just about everything else. You can drive your car out there and watch the rods from your car, and fish in 15 mts of water (towards the end). The older, smaller marina near the main boat ramp is great for Silver Trevally this time of year. Fish on the left hand side about 3/4 of the way out about where the boat mooring end, and fish straight down and berley up with pillies of bluebait. There are also huge Garfish at this time of year too at some spots. Need to be a bit of a specialist for them though, they are finicky and the experinced guys find them by sight first. Pm me if you need to find the right place to stay.

Trip ended up being a bit of a fizza. Got to Dadswell Bridge and next day got sick as a dog so we stayed at the park til friday and drove home. Very nice place and great hosts but hard to be very enthusiastic when you cant stop shaking and sweating like a pig. A few beers would make me feel a bit better but only for a short time. Did get a few pics and stopped at the old J ward jail in Ararat on the way home . Also did a quick detour to my favorite pub The Blackwood Hotel on the way home.

Looks like Portland will be a one stop holiday for another trip.

Been to Beechworth Prison lucky they did not catch me. What river was that Glen, is that a lake that you are fishing in? I love the Sale area and if I was going to settle again we would settle there. Fishing, swimming, mild climate, nice people, not to far from anywhere and I actually caught a fish there LOL

Pull on that stubby gear stick, head north & you'll soon end up with a smile like a split water melon !!! ;)
