Broke a starter rewind spring in the Stihl Blower recently. Can't complain, it had not been replaced since I purchased the blower in July 2001.

Local Stihl dealer did not have one in stock, but no probs, he ratted the parts off a new machine to get me going again. Great service - he always does this for contractors.

Now for the invoice:-

Rewind Spring $47.00 ouch
Rope Rotor $30.20 ouch again
Starter Rope $3.30 no probs.
Labour $18.00 very reasonable

Total $98.50

A spring, a piece of plastic, and some rope. Dean is correct when
he talks about price fixing in this country is an epidemic.

I did the rope rotar myself the last month in the kawasaki, after two weeks it finnally arrived, costed about the same $30, no charge for putting the spring back in, took him a couple of shots,,,theres an art to getting them back in. :)

BTW $47 sounds a lot for the spring.

Thats cheap, our Airconditioner broke a cooling fan blade, the other day. The unit has 2 cooling fan motors and the main motor. Well you can't just replace the small cooling fan blade, you have to replace the whol major motor assembly - $795.00. I contacted The manufacturer, and they avoided the subject of not being able to replace the smaller parts.

ANother rip Off.

Its a good idea to keep an out out for broken units and then you can strip them down for youre own parts list
You will be suprised at what you can find at garage sales etc pornbrokers is another good one

At our local tip they have a recycling area, always afew ood whippersnippers coming in, nothing i want as yet but i reckon for $5-$10 its a good deal if you see what you are after. :)

Verge pick ups are good to, biggest problem is its mostly home owner equiptment.

If the spring was genuine Stihl then $47 doesnt surprise me.Same with the pully[rope rotor].
Its always worth asking if aftermarket parts are available, all mower shops have accounts with at least 2 or 3 alternate suppliers and the general quality is good [just steer clear of magor engine parts, cylinders, pistons etc].
An aftermarket starter spring should set you back about $15 aprox and if the shop doesnt have one in stock they can get it the next day if it is ordered in the morning.Thats my 2 cents worth anyway. :) :) :)

And be very carefull when asking for non genuine parts because you might find out that they have been selling you non gen parts at Genuine part prices
Tossers have been doing it for years

I reckon Australia was allways different from other countries but the last few years im not sure .

Diddling your fellow Australians should be classed as immoral surely we have got past the convicts and the kelly Gang Bondi and Burke lol  :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

my advise is to boycott all of the Stihl Shops, they are all a rip off and quite often they don't do a good job....when i need my gear fixing up i have a guy who runs a small mower shop on his own that i use...his prices are very reasonable and if its just a quick fix he quite often won't charge me and he always does a good job especially for us contractors!

I used to got to the Stihl Shop accross the road from him but got sick of picking up things, paying exorbinant prices for repairs and when i go to use whatever has "been fixed" find that it is no better!

The same thing went on my BG85 in March last year & cost me a total of $51.10 & I thought THAT was very expensive! I think you need a new mechanic!

PS: I frequent 2 Stihl shops depending on where I am that day. I quite like the owners of both, they're good people & go out of their way to help. One will even take my gear to their shop for me & deliver it back when its fixed for free, hows that for service! :wave-hi:

Well the Stihl shops where you are must be better than the ones up here in the land of take take take

Mate, I have no issues with them! ;) Just the opposite! :)

There was a guy that owned one of those 2 shops B4 who was too $$$ focused but he got cancer & died (karma?) Since he sold to the new owner, everything went down in price & the service went up by a huge margin. Ironically, the new owner is an indy lawn mowing contractor too, and a nice guy with it! He even has a stop & swap blade disk thingy, where you can stop in & change your own blades in his workshop and he has the new blades on disks ready to go. You just remove your old disk & leave it there & put on a disk left by someone else but now with new blades on it. He puts new blades on your disk for the next guy! It's not for me personally, but you have to give him points for helping out where help is needed! :ebony:

From what I've seen so far seems to be just on whoever's running the joint. Eg the Honda dealer in Innisfail is CRAP CRAP CRAP!!! Have spoken to a few lawnies in town and like me they never shop their. Luckily theirs a joint in town who get all the bits a I need otherwise I go an hr up the road to Cairns.
In fact after my last visit I was soooo tempted to call Honda and let them know whos representing their gear in this town...don't know if it'd do much good but :i dunno:

I actually had a good experience with a mower shop today.

I needed a contractors head for a new whippy & stopped to get one on the way to a job.

My normal mower shop (Stihl dealer) sells non-genuine for $30.

Bought a non-genuine one from this mob for $18.

Told him what my usual shop charges & he was stunned !

He then said that was a blatant rip-off !

That's the one.

I bought it up at Castle Hill - the old All Seasons Mower shop.

I needed it there & then, but will buy another thru Dean shortly.

That place is hopeless, ever since they changed to GYC the prices went up and the service down hill. The two prior mechanics who where brilliant got sacked the day of the changeover as well.

I refuse to go there any more.

Bit strange going in & not seeing Jan there anymore....

When we went up, I couldn't fault the service - the guy on the counter went out of his way to help me.

Did seem a bit weird when we walked into the "showroom" though - more like going into a major retailer than a local mower shop.
