When starting out in this (or any industry) the key is obviously to increase your circle of influence (those who know YOU better than they know Jim...

The average individual has a circle of influence of around 200 people. This is not necessarily people we know directly so you might have 7 - 10% of that circle of influence as customers.

Once you have established a regular customer, that customers circle of influence becomes a part of yours (Your customer is more likely to recommend YOU to his or her circle of influence) so over time you might pick up a further 5 or 10 customers from that one customer.

The point being...

- Don't turn down smaller jobs - especially regular work, you don't know who they might refer later on.

- Never cut corners or do a "half job" - It goes both ways so you could lose a potential 5 or 10 referrals.

- Don't price your self out of the market - But don't give your services away either. Your referrals will get an idea of your pricing from the person referring them.
