Lawnmowing ban 'preposterous': State Government

A Sydney councillor wants the use of lawnmowers, leaf blowers and power tools restricted on weekends.

Ashfield Council in inner-west Sydney will consider a proposal to lobby the State Government and other councils, to ban the activities between 1pm and 5pm on weekends and public holidays.

The councillor who lodged the proposal says peace and quiet is essential on a weekend, and everyone can relate to being woken up from an afternoon nap by someone cutting their grass.

But the Local Government Minister, Paul Lynch, says the proposal is ridiculous.

"It is just preposterous to stop people mowing their lawn on the afternoons on weekends, it doesn't make a lot of sense," he said.

"If you're going to choose a time when there shouldn't be that sort of noise around, why on earth would you stop it on the afternoon of a Saturday or a Sunday?"

"The reality is, that's the only time that a lot of people get to mow their lawns."

Mr Lynch says even if Ashfield Council approves the proposal, the State Government will not change current laws.
