Hi guys and gals,

noticed recently that my windows defragger thingy ain't workin'...it starts when schuduled fine but keeps stalling every few seconds, I got an error message when I first noticed and tryed messing with it saying another program could be running or something...

I have a zonealarm firewall, norton antivirus only opperating all of the time.

Anyone got any clues on how to find the problem?

Sounds like Windows 98???

If it is have you run Scan disk first?

If it is try ctrl-alt-del all at the same time and close some programs down. Leave only systray and explorer open. Make sure there is no screen saver running. Sounds like it is stopping because a program is writing to or reading the Hard drive.

If that does not work, blow, it all way and reload your operating system. Should do this at least every 12 months (3 is better.)

Oh!

If you do blow it away, please back up your files first coz they wont be there if you reload.

Do not reload your O.S over the top of the old one that does not work. You would need to reformat.

(Note: This action is the absolute last resort try to repair the O.S first.)

Thanks mate,

only re set everything within the last 6 months, new motherboard, hard drive etc.

I have de frag set for 1 am auto, virus scan finishes at 11.30.
Nothing else is running, I reboot the pc at about 10.45 when I shut it down so no other programs are running...

Sinch stalling office 2000 I think it started not working....maybe :)

Yes, windows 98.

Touch wood, the computer is running the best it ever has, except for defrag.

Spose I should just take it to the repair shop.

When you put on Win 2000 did you reformat then load it?

How old is the Computer?

Is it win 98 or win 2000?

Have you thought about Win XP

Oh my gosh, did any of you ever use Windows ME, eeeeessh, I had such bad experiences with that version. YUCK

I have never defragmented in my life

Windows 98 was good, I love windows XP... those two would be my favorites

Thanks mate, had a feeling that would be the case. I'll just take it to the techie, he can fix it....only a de fragger, be something simple.

Eb, yep had ME! That sucked big time.

Then got 98 and then XP put over that. (so I'd have to dissagree with Pres) (my cousins a techie and did it. I should mention he had to get ALOT of fix's for the verious prog's) Worked well for a while!

Now straight XP! New mother board, new hard drive (now have 2), more memory and waiting on a sound board!
Gotta love this stuff! NOT!

Good luck with the frigginfraggin!

I should refine my answer, yes it will work but you are better off formatting and starting from scrath.

Turn off your firewall and your anti virus software till after you defrag.
At the very least the anti virus and firewall will slow the defrag down to a crawl because it continually senses something trying to access files.

Thems my 2 cents worth.

Thanks Dave, I think you are right.

I think it could be the Zone Alarm free firewall actually...

The antivirus hasn't effected it before...
