Thanks Jason,

Very good advice here...we all should print out the 5 key steps and carry them with us at all times.

They are very good prompts to ensure that we maintain a safe workplace.

Cheers ;)

Safety statistics
Ladder accidents weren’t always due to faulty equipment, but could be blamed on unsafe practices, a Royal Adelaide Hospital report has found. The report, which revealed a high incidence of ladder deaths and injuries, prompted the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to issue a safety alert in 2006.

"While many of those injured were experienced handymen, the repetition of tasks can lead to complacency and over-confidence which may result in people taking shortcuts and the publication aims to remind people of the hazards of taking these risks", ACCC commissioner Mr Martin said in a statement. "At least 83 Australians have died during the past five years after falling from their ladder and thousands more have been seriously injured."

The Medical Journal of Australia has reported that, on average, in Victoria, more than 1,000 people per year attend hospital from ladder falls. The majority of those injured were men aged 50 and over who fell more than one metre.

Ladder safety tips
The ACCC has released a safety alert, warning of ladder dangers and giving tips on how to scale the stepladder safely.
