G'Day Guys and Gals.
Just replaced broken pull cord on my 216 and now the bugger wont recoil all the way back into the thingy :o
Any tips? Have I done something wrong or is it stuffed and need replacing?
Any suggestions gratfully appreciated :)

Not sure about this!

But, is the return spring pre-tensioned enough before you wind the cord?

If it doesn't recoil all the way take the pullstart off the machine. Get a little screw driver and pull the rope back away from the pulley on the inside of housing. There will be a little notch out of the pulley that the rope can slot into and you can wrap the rope around the pulley another time. This will give it more tension. If it already tensioned up all the way, then your rope is too long.

I also have a similar prob,I've replaced the cord and it pulls and retracts fine when not bolted back to mower, but when in situ it pulls out but won't retract!if I loosen 1 or more bolts it will retract but can't see why it's getting stuck??...

Cord is actually smaller diameter than original

You may need to wind the tention on the spring a bit more so it pulls the rope in

no idea why it's getting stuck but as it works when not attached firmly to mower cover it sounds like something is grabbing ,have you tried placing washers as spacers between the cover and starter assembly this may raise it enough to stop it grabbing and still enable you to tighten the nuts enough that they won't vibrate loose

you may need to loosen/tighten the screw/nut that holds the recoil mechanism together (one in centre underneath recoil assembly)

Thanks for all the replies guys.i bolted it up with pull cord on left hand side(opposite to normal) and she works fine!! So maybe the spring had half a wind too many or too little??or the cord was different length,it was roughly the same but i didn't measure it exactly.

I hate trying to fix the recoil springs. Last time I wasted half a day on one. Took it to shop and they had it done and reassembled in under 10 minutes!
