The man who changed America's landscape

When you're hitting the yard work today — or watching your neighbors do it — remember Cecil Pond.

Fifty years ago, the now-80-year-old Treasure Coast resident invented the first lawn and garden tractor, now better known as the riding mower
Pond's models — the Ride-Away Jr., the Lone Ranger and others — aren't made anymore, though their popularity lives on.
"Anytime you see someone mowing their lawn on a John Deere or a Craftsman, that's all because of him," said Michael Martino, who wrote a book about Pond.
Although Pond hasn't mowed his own grass since he was a kid and doesn't have a riding lawn mower or any lawn mower in his Palm City garage, watching people sit while mowing the grass makes him smile.

"They're mowing their lawn and having fun," he said. "I contributed to that."
