A written offer to contract goods or services at a specified cost or rate; a bid.

Companies, councils, government request tenders meaning they would like quotes to enter into a contract to supply services. It could be anything from labor to supply of machinery and they will usually give guidelines to address in the tender so they can rate them and choose the best or most suited.

Don't know what it's like in other states but here in Victoria the tender process has rigid rules. The tenders are advertised and anyone intending to "tender" their quote must obtain the documents from the requestor and those documents outline the works and any specific requirements as to scope of work, timeframe for completion, required plant and equipment, required licensing and insurance, how the tenderer will address delays due to weather or other unexpected situations, previous experience in similar works etc.

The potential supplier of the goods and/or services must address how they can meet each aspect of the tender requirements and submit their best price.

Government tenders must be posted in a special tender box at the relevant office and that box is not opened until tenders close.

The cheapest quote does not always get the job.

Here's an example of some that are currently open...

good one man!!

i get it now, and nice way to organize and solicite i would think?!!

is it a pain, or usually a good process.

i am sure in some larger cities it is done in the US, but not here, you have to be in the know. 95% of the time it is the cheapest bidder to get the job.
