What detrgent to add to roundup?
G'day everyone. I am a newbie and was wondering what detergents people use in their roundup mix and what ratios. at the moment I'm putting about a teaspoon of dish washing liquid to a 15 ltr backpack sprayer.
And you can check: Autobarn Catalogue
Cheers, Dave.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
I use Kendrall from my local supplier with Weedmaster Duo. 2.5 ml per 15L. Cheap as chips and works great, only needs to be on for an hour before rain to get a kill.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
Thanks troppo. Just looked them up, interesting.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
Best to use a proper surfactant / wetter (eg Kendrall such as troppo suggested) at the rate as stated on its label.
It needs to be "non ionic" (ionic chemicals, including muddy water react with the glypho and reduce its effectiveness) so that rules out all 'washing detergents'.
Organic based detergents probably make it.
At times look at using a penetrant such as Pulse (tm). There are other brand names for the essentially the same substance.
A penetrant serves a different role to a surfactant / wetter as it aids penetration of the chemical (glyphosate) through the leaf surface (cuticle) of plants that have waxy leaves (eg angled onion).
I think you will also read that it makes the chemical "rainfast" much quicker .... so potential rainfall in the next 6-12 hours is not so much of a problem.
Joe.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
I use about an eggcup of detergent to 5 ltrs of mix, I only focus on driveways, paths and the odd spot weed.Add the chemicles and detergent last.

Roundup Ultramax is now 20 minute rainfast. I've actually sprayed it in light rain and had good results.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
I have only used surfactants twice, that was supplied by clients and on golf courses. I use approx 20ml of liquid detergent and a capful of vegetable oil. Rain fast in 20 minutes, never had a problem and so much cheaper than buying surfactants. Used this mix for the last 20 years. If rain not threating I still us oil and detergent if the plants I am targeting have a waxy leaf.
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
Joe, you are spot on. If you want to knock the common fence ivy that invades fences etc, follow Joe's advice. Pulse will allow the product to cut thru waxy leaf surfaces, and aids to get the chemical past dusty leaf surfaces. Omo is great for dishes. Pulse is what committed weed assasins use!
Re: What detrgent to add to roundup?
P.S. In most circumstances, use an extremely low pressures - larger - heavier droplet sizes for this product.
Slower, but a more targeted application.
Observe the dye indicator - use plenty of colour and minimise FUs
