Do you have an earth cable running through the plug?
Have seen some that rely on the tow bar/coupling to earth the trailer which can be a bit hit and miss.
Definitely worth checking the piggy back...
Check the earth.Doesn't matter what type of globe, they wont work properlyy if the earth is loose/corroded.
