    Default LETS talk BLADES

Hey ya guys well today after i had my 5th bourbon i decided to tinker with my Mower ( Honda Self prep ) i often do tinker, its in my blood as a panel beater i have always been tinkering hehe, So first thing i do is check my blades, i often check them atleast once every 2 weeks, i have known they were wearing but i wasnt too fust, and too my ammazement 2 out of the 4 had holes in ( See pic ) Now im not sure if this is wear or if i have hit something.?? Some lawns i have done they have been that over ground u dont know whats in there and i have hit some weird sh*t in the past.these blades are roughly 2 months old they are the original that came with the mower that i had bought brand spanking new, i just hope i get a bit more go out of the new ones
this is my saturday arfternoon ramble

so the purpose of the new post is to find out from you blokes which blades are better than some or which ones do u prefer and how much
and do you always carry a spare set as well as a blade for the edger???
    cheers guys

Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

I change mine once a month, when I change the oil. The more lawns you do, obviously the more you will need to change them. If I feel a vibration through the mower, I check them, and I check them every time I wash the underside of the mower on the weekends.

i check mine from the discharge port every 2 or 3 mows to ensure they are "ok"

change when needed (before they get holes in the flute lol)

mine usually turn up at the tip before they get holes in the flute, and i change them also if i notice its not cutting right - usually the cause is up turned tips.

i never found much use in sharpening honda blades.

i buy them from my local shop, 1.40 each blade i think he charges me,

and i keep 3 or 4 SETS of blades in the trailer, and whippy blades and string galore.'

    cheers

That's because you shouldn't let em get that bad hehe. I have found the gaspares blades to be the best. Costs me about $50 for 8 blades and 8 nuts and bolts.

I get holes in the fluted part of the blade when mowing really sandy lawns, thats what does it, it only takes 2 or 3 really sandy lawns to do it, these are places close to the beach that were once sand dunes lol

That's the first time I've seen holes worn in blades, I change mine while the front edge is still a straight line. I use the bynorm ones.

I guess as your run builds and you group your lawns, you will be looking to at least double that Greenie, then again you know what you want out of your business.

I'll mow 8 to 12 lawns a day on sandy soil and my blades last up to 4 wks. Indi shop is good but Im trying some extra hardened ones off evilbay. So far they are looking good but have only been on 3 wks. The next set ill try will be cox rideon blades.

Just bear in mind that more hardened the blade is, the more brittle it is. It may last longer but it could also shatter and come flying out the side of the mower if you happen to hit something hard.

Ha Ha know what you mean though. If i dont change my blades in 2 weeks I may as well mow with a cake mixer. I buy 10 packs from indy and sharpen quite often.
