How do you find tdc on a honda with blade brake ..i`am guessing have to take the pull start housing off and turn the engine from there and not the blade..

Should have watched the honda vid before last post found the answer
....Nothing like a good whipper....
the second vid is the way to go. just use the valve clearances paul posted up. supposed to do it on a cold engine also.
id suggest clean the front of the mower before you remove the valve cover so dust doesn't go inside and be prepared for some oil to come out.
also after you adjust maybe turn the engine over a couple of times then retest the gap as the adjustments are really sensitive.
but its super easy and best thing is how easy it is to pull cord to start once done.
i didn't bother changing gaskets or anything like that either
can`t see no reason for new rocker cover gasket as long as the surfaces are very clean and the bolts aren`t too tight as to squash the gasket..great info fellas

just wondering how did u go.?? get it all fixed.?
Didn't pull the carby apart again as I had planned.
All I've done since then was check the valve clearance, which seemed fine, changed the oil & filter and fitted a new exhaust manifold gasket.
The mower has been idling fine for quite a while now. It seems to almost backfire or crackle a lot when I slow the revs from full to idle but I think it has always done this.
In the last week though it has become hard to start - takes quite a few hefty pulls to get it going so that's the next thing I have to sort now!
the symptoms you mention are what can happen if valves are out of adjustment
does it backfire from exhaust?
also when you say hefty pulls .. is the actual starter rope physically harder to pull than usual?
if the cord is harder to pull usually the valves are out of adjustment. when turning over slowly, the exhaust valve opens to let pressure out of cylinder to make easier to turn over when starting
did you move nuts on valves at all?
heres a pic from the US Honda siteCapture.JPG
sounds like another reason not to buy a honda

Chris I didn't reset anything with the valve clearances. Slid the feeler-gauge in to check and the clearances were right on the Honda specs. I wondered about adjusting them because the specs the guy in one of the vids gave were different. All last week when I used it I kept thinking valve clearance but kept assuring myself it wasn't as I hadn't changed anything.
not a real fan of any mowers any more, they all seem to be getting cheap & nastier, but I do have issues with Honda gear of the last 5-10 years or so (in case you hadn't noticed lol)

well if the piston was in the right position when you measured the valves then i guess its not them.
according to google other symptoms could be air fuel ratio off causing backfires or timing off from flywheel maybe
def hard to buy a true commercial 21" mower... even honda's true commercial with hydro drive still has the crappy levers etc.. although a step in the right direction for 2.5k cant see the value
i know redeye wont agree but i wish stihl made a mower.. maybe a 4mix even .. would be good i rkn.. they seem to get max power out of their engines ... maybe a bigger version of the backpack blower hehe (yes its easy to start )
