Looking at the style of the deck would it be fair to say it's shaft-driven like a Honda? The chute size and shape would seem to suggest that.
yeah i think they are belt drive.... lighter than Honda.... thought of getting one... but an extra $200 or so for the Honda...with blade brake & rear chute for ferals.... and the Honda is very good on fuel....
They look ok, but I think threads in the past have *****ed about the sp breaking down? The Briggs is definately a seller on it for me (also very good on fuel) and it looks to have wide shoot? (not sure what model they are showing the shoot of in the cataloge.) I would have a closer look at one, particularly the pushie with 850.

It looks identical to the victa turfmaster.mine was great until I changed the blades now I'm searching for a after market set.
the best bases have always been the masports and steelforts, both NZ companies - look at the 1st series bushrangers

The S.P. Masport appears a reasonable sturdy mower. Anybody know anything about the variable speed self propelled system?. Now they have the B.S.850 motor, worth a try if the self propelled drive is equal too or more reliable than the Rover Self Propelled S.P. drive system. It would also be nice if self propelled is easy to maintain, also work on and without clips holding wheels on, which we have to take off and back on frequently when lubricating the self drive rover mower. I know I want the perfect mower, don't we all.
i used a demo model for a month.
Pros:fast, mulched well & caught well, drive systen similiar to rover but with metal cog driving metal ring on wheel so will last almost forever
Cons:back plate covering pulley from catcher fell off as only held on by one screw( came off within two days, customer found it in pile of clipping),where variable speed pulleys are it gets a lot of grass so needs cleaning out every couple of days(this can be fixed if they put a plate under rear pulley area)as it also picks up flax etc & wraps around pulley, rear axle broke at welded point as only half welded & when rep brought out new one it was welded the same
if i bought machine i would make these mods before leaving shop

my main machine broke down, & i was using backup as parts on back order & owner of shop had been given one to show off to contractors, he rang me & said he would let me use until my machine fixed. It was good to have machine for that long as if only had for a day or two would not have discovered the issues with machine. I also did report up for rep so he could try to rectify the problems.
I am going to look at the pushie version for my new sidekick. Anything that catches well and has the 850 on it has me interested.

We may have just stumbled upon a winner!! They seem like minor problems in the greater scheme of things compared to the honda and rover few extra welds and a cover with a few more bolts, and a rep and company willing to listen to a lawny.......

My mower bloke reckons they are the pick of the bunch. but at the moment you can get a runout rover 560 with the briggs 850 for under a grand. Why wouldn't you do that?

Hi, I have looked at these a few years ago, didn't buy one as I couldn't get any feedback from anyone on them. This was when bushrangers disapeared. It's a bit of money to spend without feedback or even being unable to see one in the flesh. I have found bushrangers again. MTD 509x all bushranger (the silver steelfort based one)but it's green and kolher powered and at only $830 for the SP and $670 for the pushie it's the best deal going. I have had Kawa powered mowers for years now so the kolher seems a little underpowered cuts and catches awsome though. You wont get a better catching mower. I am going down to waverley mowers when I get time to pick up one of those $599 kawa powered honda copies when I get a chance and gonna swap the engines over then plan on selling the honda copy with the kolher on it. So I will end up with a Kawa powered bushranger at a cheaper price than I paid for my original Bushie 3-4 years ago.
Check them out!!
Cheers Rick
Thankyou for an excellent review of the Masport variable speed mower. One could perhaps presume that the Masport you trialed may be a good mower to purchase now those pesty bugs have been fixed. I would happily write a review also if permitted to trial one of the machine and if satisfied purchase it. Unfortunately here in Adelaide, S.Aust, I have been unable to locate a Masport Mower with the Briggs 850 motor on it. I telephone Masport and thay advised they are awaiting arrival of their next container. Disappointing I guess, but that is how things are. Considering the current circumstances within the industry with Rover going away from the Briggs & Stratton Motors, it appear that Masport may well be missing an opportunity to promote their commercial walk behind mowers. Many contracters have expressed some concern about the untried rover engine, all be it, the rover engine may or may not be a reliable and suitable motor.
