    Default Quoting large job

I got a call from a customer who I thought wanted lawns done. Turns out she has a "garden bed" of agapanthus, grass clippings, soil, etc. that were there before she bought the house. She's in Rosebud and the council told her she has to remove the agi's and tidy up the front.

She also wants the old crappy wooden fence demolished and removed, and then out the back there is a big stack of building rubbish, timber, basins, roof tiles, etc, for removal.

Pretty sure the job would need the use of a dingo or something similar, and also a big trailer to remove it all.

I've only got a 4 cylinder auto Mazda and a small trailer, and this is a bit out of my league and not what I normally do.

The rubbish strip is about 1 metre wide, 7 metres long and up to 800mm high in spots. It has good access through a side gate.

What should I charge for this? I know you can only tell so much from pictures.

Having trouble putting the nature strip pictures up, will try another post.

    Let's try those pics again IMAG0680.jpg IMAG0681.jpg

The agapanthus are only quite small and come out Ok, (compared to some big one's I've removed!).
The nature strip is about 1 metre wide and 7 metres long.

The fence can be knocked down first to make access easier also.

What should I be quoting? Or I'm prepared to handball it if it's to much trouble for me to do.

Leon you'll get more detailed responses in the member's section but my suggestion if you are worried about how to get rid of everything, get a skip on site and add the price to your quote...you would be charging the customer significant dump fees anyway and this may just work out about the same.

If you don't have a dingo or bobcat, again hire one and on charge it to the customer.

If she has been given instruction by council, she will have to action it or risk a fine so charge accordingly.

You can sell the agapathus on ebay (seriously)

    Cheers Joanne,

I wasn't sure where to post, but you're right- Members would be best. I hadn't thought of a skip on site, but was aware of the need for dingo/bobcat hire.

Can I move thread to the members section or do I just repost?

    Gday Leon,
This is the type of work I specialise in....one off rubbish removal, garden tidy-ups etc from REA's. Im not a paid-up member yet, so will contribute here.

It will be a bit trickier without a ute or large trailer(hire a large trailer?), my plan of attack would be reverse ute right up to the rubbish....looks like mainly timber(that stacks well), & metal that is recycleble. And copper which can be sold as scrap. Borderline one ute load so allow for two.(one large trailer load would do it.)
Most importantly....be careful of what will most likely be asbestos that is still attached in various parts to the old hardwood studs. I would decline the job if this was excessive!! . Or remove it from the studs using appropiate safety gear & charge accordingly! (you may understandably & quite rightly be banned from the tip if you try to take asbestos to the wrong tip).

Subbie in a dingo or bobcat (with tracks will minimise damage to nature, good operator shouldnt damage anyway), an hour will do it, but most have a minimum charge, you want an operator that will dump the waste for free, so ask about that first.

Front fence 2hrs to demolish & load + drive to tip + fee.

I havent mentioned prices as im not sure where the tip is in relation to the job, & what they charge.
    Hope that helped a little.

    cheers

Regarding disposal of plants like aggi .... 'environmental weeds'.

Some councils (eg Yarra Ranges, Vic) will give you or the property owner one or more free vouchers which will allow you to take a ute or trailerload of 'environmental weeds' (aggi, holly, ivy, wandering trad etc) to the tip for free as long as that is all that is in the load.
Often worth a check with what the environment section of local council has on offer as many ppl are unaware.

I call 'em "The North Shore Weed" because they're everywhere around here - lining drive ways, replacing nature strips, filling up overly shady garden beds. I don't know why they're so popular as they just greenery most of the year and they're not that flash looking unless they get a good feed now and then. However, go to a nursery and a 10 cm pot with about eight 15 mm wide leaves is at least $17.95 retail. Go figure.

I should germinate the thousands of seeds from my agapanthus and sell them as tube stock for a couple of bucks each...
