Thread: Ground covers

    Default Ground covers

Can anyone recommend some low groundcover plants with a little color that like or tolerate a mixture of heavy clay and/or roadbase mixed in. It is a commercial site. Gotta be reasonably cheap because will need to plant quite a few and will probably have some losses also.

One of my faves is myoporum parvifolium (fine leaf form) or just the normal green form. Beautiful limey green ferny foliage. Hardy, grows in any soil. Thick coverage. Fast growing and spreads over 2m. I wouldn't plant them any closer than 1m apart even though youll be tempted to. Grows about a meter a year. White flowers in spring/summer. Also looks good with any plant. You can get em anywhere and in tubes even if you want. Just had a look on the net to show you a good picture, but the pictures don't do it justice. I'll try to find one for you.

Another good ground cover that doesn't get too high and woody is grevillea poorinda royal mantle. Stunner.

Thanks mate. I will try to get hold of some. I will use a post hole digger and will dig the holes out well and add potting/planting mix. Have probably 30+ to do and the clay is hard but from experience at this site the road base was even harder to dig through.

While we are at it what about native type plants that grow up to approx. 1 mtr height that are suitably tolerant of clay soil.
