It's the sad reality. Ideally I'd like to run a 10 worker crew, which in the not too distant future could be a reality.

I spoke to one of the supplier for ISS who do the council contract for Melton, they work on $55 per hour, for all their workers. (They're running 30-40K machines, plus trucks, utes etc etc)

Funny story, one of their trucks bit the dust in the middle of the roundabout of a busy intersection, towed it to a safer place for the guy

used to work on the citywide contract when they had Melton council ...they were on approx. $60 an hr. and we had a lot more guys on the ground than ISS.
I dont break things ...I just use them beyond their operational limitations

With more middle management and higher running costs no doubt....

higher running costs I don't doubt, given we always had new vehicles and machinery and then as said the staff numbers ...as for management, at least on the contract I was on, I wouldn't let them manage a f**k in a brothel ...we lost the contract by over $5M over a 5 year term ...then we (ground staff) get told the tender manager who was sent to win the contract again (after citywide had had it for 7 years) lost the last 6 tenders he went for in renewal stages lol

Is this what made you go out on your own? It seems that a lot of mowing or grounds maintenance businesses get too big, then they fall in a heap. I have seen it happen quite often.

nah mate, that was about 6 years ago there abouts. They haven't fallen in a heap by any means, Citywide is huge ...even up here they are getting big now. Always had a plan to go out on my own, was just biding my time. That and doing my trade I had to wait. But I am hoping to eventually be able to compete with the likes of them on a small contract side of things ...slowly slowly it'll get there.
