allrighty then Best way to kill and stop the growth of a vine?

I have a customer who has a creeping vine that grows everywhere that they would like completely killed.

I was wondering what you guys thought would be the best option.

I was thinking a double dose of RoundUp UltraMax mixed with Brushoff.

    ThoughtS?

Yes, what sort of vine? Do you have pics? Some can just be pulled out at the root if you can find it, Others can be a lot more difficult.

    It looks like this.

Apparently they tried killing it, however it came back and caused issues again.

If I'm right? Find the main trunk cut it at ground level and remove everything else but keep an eye out for anywhere else it is rooted in. Drill a couple of holes in the outside rings of the stump and fill with poison. If you drill straight into the middle it wont work. If it has taken hold anywhere else in substrate you will need to poison there as well. I personal think it is one of the easier vines to get rid of.

Remove most of it and spray it with Garlon 600. Might take two goes.

+1 for Cranbourne's method - commonly called "drill and fill"

If you use Garlon -- my advice is don't spray, but follow the 'basal bark' application method in the instructions.
That is, mix with diesel in 60 diesel : 1 Garlon and then PAINT onto the bark / stem of plant.
The mixture will penetrate the bark and kill.
    Same applies to Starane.
    But NOT glyphosate.

    Weird **** !

The pic they have put up is plain old english ivy (Hedra helix).

Please explain the situation it is growing in, on a fence, amongst other plants, by itself, along the ground, climbing trees ???

    Cheers Fred.

Do you have a pic of it in its particular situation so we can assess the size/scope of the prob ?
    Cheers Fred.

Hi Guys, got ivy well established in a small narrow garden bed along a rock wall. Probably 1M deep by 15m length. As it is climbing through trees most plants/trees are being cut down to stump.

When is the best time to spray it? Winter? Spring? Summer?
What is good to use? A above even a combination
We will also drill and apply the chemical.

After it dying off we will pull up most and then cut it off at main root systems, drill and re-apply the chemical

Living in the Dandenongs we have much experience with ivy ....

Any that is climbing trees .. Just cut through the stems 20-30cm above ground and IMMEDIATELY dab BOTH CUT ENDS with 100% Glypho + a bit of pulse.
You can also scrape stem of ivy and apply glypho to the scraped area.
Stuff up the tree will die over a couple of weeks and fall off by itself over the next 12 months or so.
No further action is needed to tear it down other than for appearance reasons.

The stuff covering the ground can treated by spraying. The usual 'scorched earth' mix is a cocktail of glypho + tricopyr (Garlon). Can help to mow or whippersnip to bruise stems and enhance uptake, or mow then chemically attack the regrowth. As ivy has a waxy cuticle, you need the miscible oil based herbicides (eg Garlon, Starane etc) to get penetration, otherwise roundup alone will need Pulse penetrant.

I have found that handpulling it up (when it's a complete dense carpet on ground) and then chemical attack on the (relatively limited) regrowth to be effective. To do the area you refer to is not that daunting.

Another way that is pretty effective on the ground stuff is to apply a propane flame weeder until you hear the stems pop and sizzle. Will produce quite a bit of steam & smoke in process, but will take out the top growth pretty well.
When regrowth occurrs, either another assault with flame or chemicals.

Unfortunately one treatment will not eradicate this pest plant using any method but it will be a war of attrition.

Yup - whatever you do, you will need to keep at it every few months - and it may take more than three attendances...
