Better pic as Red said, if you can.
Im thinking Elaeocarpus reticulates, (Blueberry ash).
Does it have light pink flowers & blue berries ?
Cheers Fred.
it looks familiar to me, Euro/American, the one I'm thinking of has yellow leaves just like it...golden something (I can't remember 90% of bot. names anymore (don't smoke!!))

Looks like it is related to the Golden Elm tree. Golden Elm has the same type of leaf except that it is yellow in colour. Couple of better pics would be good.

Mowbro, It is quite easy to tell whether it is an Elm. If you look at where the leaf joins the stem, one side of the leaf will join a couple of millimetres above the other side. It is very distinctive. If that doesn't make sense, post another photo of where the leaf joins the stem. Cheers
Elms & ash are deciduous.
Cheers Fred.
I'll be taking a look in person tomorrow so I'll take some photos with my own camera and post them up here.
Thanks for your help so far, lads!
So, I finally have the answer! It was a Carpinus Betulus 'fastigiata' also commonly known as a "Hornbeam".

Great looking foliage in warmer months but also like its intricate branch structure when the leaves are gone!

Well done mowbro. Lovely looking tree and not one seen in Melbourne gardens much.
