I'm currently in Yerecoin WA on a weeks holiday and I will say it, has been extremely hot. The last 3 days have been 42-46deg, today was a little better at around 32. I'm a Brisbane boy born and bred, and I have to say I like the heat in WA better then QLD. I'm know where near sweating as much here. Biggest issue they have is, It is dead grass and dirt that exists around here at the moment. I fly back on the 18th and really not looking forward to the heat back in QLD, I have also been considering a 3 month harvesting stint as I have an agricultural background and my brother in law would be able to hook me up with work easily. Good way to earn more money for the business.

It's been a poor mowing/gardening season here so far as well. Looking forward to winter already. I've doubled my firewood contracts this year, so that should help to keep the bank manager happy.

djkgrounds, I did some time on wheat properties in Western NSW a few years ago. The hourly rate wasn't great but you could put in some big hours in a short time. Last harvest I did I got 250 odd hours in 17 days and we lost a couple of days due to rain. Pretty stressful though because any hiccups can result in huge losses.

Amanda's Dad used to go down with his truck and trailers to NSW each year for the wheat harvest. Got out of it years ago now as it became too unreliable and then he had a fall when tarping up the trailers and got a really bad spiral fracture through one of his legs. Got a job closer to home hauling logs on contract to Brisbane and hasn't looked back since.

Today was 42, Tomorrow (Thurs) 44, Frid 43, Sat 42

Pulled the pin on work at 10.45am and went home and collected my wife to have lunch at the local Tavern over some cold schooners = magic. For the rest of the arvo floated around the pool all day with the esky nearby.
Had an early evening nap and now posting here.
Tomorrow at 44 deg I can't see myself getting past 11.00 re work with jobs mounting up not done for a solid catch up next week. Sending out communicate to customers to explains it's kinda too hot.

Must be soft or hate sweat dripping into my eyes, but when I was coming home from the pub today. We saw two blokes on a concrete tiled roof installing solar panels at 1.30pm and they didn't even have any type of hat on.
Call me soft, but I'd prefer to switch off go home and get out of the heat.
    Cheers Garry

Bugger that. If you're chucking then you're suffering heat distress and shouldn't be working. Either that or he had a bad pie for lunch...

Weather isn't too bad here except for being so dry. Hoping I can start back tomorrow as I slowly get better from this bronchitis. Lot of jobs to catch up on now.

Yeah, bit like the guys installing new roof tiles yesterday. I knocked off when it hit 40c and drove past these 3 guys. 1 loading from the ground and 2 on the roof. Just shorts, shoes and sunnies.
I can say at least a well timed migraine this morning kept me away from work but will do 4 hrs Friday - try to get as many ride on jobs though as it always seems to be cooler on the ride on

being so dry i have postponed all ride on work on a total fire ban...john you sure you feel comfortable about operating on a total fire ban....the rules do allow it but there are several things you have to do especially if the grass is dry.......hate to cause a spark and light up the country side ...maybe thats the farm boy in me always taught dont operate machinary like tractors and rideon when its a total fire ban,,,even the fire chief said on the news please delay it

    I feel totally comfortable Geoffrey

Maybe the difference is the green vegetation I have where I am working. Besides what you see below from the CFA website I carry a small fire ext on ride ons, 3x4.5kgs +1kg in the ute and make sure hoses are ready in the yards. I am not talking acreage, just your larger resi yards that can be done with the 34inch Dixon. Saying that I don't think the ones I mowed will be green when I get back to them. Had today off with migraine and taking Friday off so they should be right for Saturday!

Can I use a chainsaw, plant or grass trimmer or lawn mower?During Fire Danger Period:

Yes. Chainsaws, plant or grass trimmers or lawn mowers may be used in green vegetation without limitation.
But, for use in vegetation that is not green, chainsaws, plant or grass trimmers or lawn mowers must be:
    • Free from faults and mechanical defects that could cause an outbreak of fire
    • Fitted with an efficient spark arrester
    • Have an area of at least 3 metres around the machine cleared of flammable material.
    • Further, the operator of the machine, who must be in attendance at all times the machine is being used, must carry either of the following fire suppression equipment:
o at least one knapsack spray pump, in working order, fully charged with water,
o with a capacity of not less than 9 litres
o at least one water (stored pressure) fire extinguisher, in working order, fully charged with water and maintained at the correct pressure, with a capacity of not less than 9 litres.

Note that the spark arrester, the knapsack spray pump and the water fire extinguisher referred to above must comply with the applicable Australian Standards.
    On Total Fire Ban Days:
Yes. As for the Fire Danger Period.
However, if possible, postpone this work as the risk of starting fires is extremely high.

mate if your comfortable thats fine but being in a bush fires as a kid and teenager and then the 80s brutally fires i never forget how terrifying they are...of course normal house blocks are fine and agree but to run machinery on acreage or large areas is dumb ...fcking dumb ...i know we have schedules but theres no difference in rain days is there ??? sorry John but have seen and experienced so much tragedy in my life with fires i get nervous

Yep, I and the owner of a farm ranch jointly cancelled today's original booking last Monday.
Last year at the same property I had to use my 9ltr extinguisher for an incident unrelated to me to help out. These great clients of mine even have their own fire truck in their big shed, be an older one.
Also last year had to go to local fire brigade to see if a local church could be done on a Saturday prior to Sunday's service as a TFBan day was declared as the church bordered on a rural edge.(ride-on job) They said have the extinguisher handy and no problems as the wind in the correct direction and the grass was a green lawn.

As a grade 5 primary kid I experienced the Lara Bush Fires and will never ever forget the grass fire wall confronting us as dad chucked us in the 1964 XM Falcon and floored the Super Pursuit Motor 2 speed Fordomatic to safety Jack Brabham style.
    Cheers Garry
