Brisbane has been declared a natural disaster area, as soldiers and prisoners help repair damage caused by one of the biggest storms to hit the city in two decades.
About 30,000 properties across Brisbane, Redcliffe and the Gold Coast were without power on Monday afternoon after Sunday's storm brought hail and wind gusts of up to 130km/h, unroofed homes and toppled power lines and trees.
Emergency authorities said up to 4,000 homes were damaged, with 300 homes "significantly damaged" and 30 deemed unlivable.
While most areas received 40mm to 60mm of rain, Ferny Hills, in the north-western suburbs of Brisbane received 80mm, 69mm of which fell in the space of 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon.
A 20-year-old man was killed when he was swept away by quickly rising water while photographing the storm in a drain with a 23-year-old friend at Chermside, in Brisbane's northern suburbs.
Premier Anna Bligh compared the disaster to Cyclone Larry, which devastated north Queensland in 2006.
Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard activated natural disaster relief and recovery arrangements, including the deployment of more than 100 chainsaw-equipped soldiers
(i wonder if they have done a chainsaw course) , and pledged to cover half of the state government's clean-up costs.
"The public rightly expects all levels of government to work closely together in times of need so that the community can bounce back quickly," Ms Gillard said.
"The government's thoughts are with the thousands of families that have been caught up in this disaster and most particularly with the family of the young man who tragically lost his life."
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said 1,200 people, including emergency services personnel, Energex staff, Queensland police and the army, were working on the clean-up.
Police recruits and 20 low-level security prisoners were also involved in the effort, the state government said.
"Nothing like this has happened to the city for at least 10 years," Mr Newman said.
"Perhaps it goes back to 1985 with a very big storm back in those days."
He said Energex had recorded 576 cases of toppled powerlines.
Some homes are expected to remain without power for another 48 hours.
The city council has warned residents in western Brisbane to boil their water or buy bottled water after a bird dropping-coated roof collapsed into a reservoir at The Gap - the worst-hit area of the city.
Transport services are expected to remain disrupted into Tuesday and traffic lights are out at many intersections.
Ms Bligh said families severely affected by the storm were eligible for a cash assistance payment of up to $765 and individuals could claim $165.
"These are just the immediate cash payments for people who have literally got nothing, for people who need to buy food for their children or buy clothes," she said.
Ms Bligh said some people would not be able to return home for weeks.
Police patrols are being boosted to deter looters.
Ms Bligh said up to 4,000 insurance claims had already been made but this would grow.
She also warned more storms were expected to hit south-east Queensland on Thursday.
Two Catholic schools badly damaged by the storms, St Andrew's at Ferny Grove and St Peter Chanel at The Gap, will remain closed until at least Wednesday, school authorities say.
Yeah I watched this on the news. Made a mess of things didn't it. I don't think houses in Brissy have to be built to cyclone standards but something like this would sure make you wish you did.
After having lived so long in Far North Qld I still cannot get out of old habits. Still keep a emergency kit and have a gen set on hand just for something like this.

I live in one of worst hit suburbs of brisbane and this storm just came from nowhere it was absolutely horrific, just got power back on last yesterday and able to see news and say the amoun of damage done mother nature was upset on sunday for sure.
The amazing thing is human nature, after securing my place and neighbours ( chainsaw trees, tarps, etc ) my brother inlaw was screamin for help as he had a couple of huge trees smashed into his house and needed help to stablise them and tarp roof, however we had limited road access 1/2 lane an footpath in and out of our area and it was totally choked with sightseers emergency services unable to get in because of these idiots out to see first hand others misery what a pack of losers, so I had to return home took me nearly 1hr to do round trip 1km. My mobile has been ringing hot however I have told people I will stay off the road this week to keep out of the way of the essential services so that they are able to get to everyone. Despite thenews repots the usual whingers services are too so to respond I can't praise them enough They were on the ground within a couple of hours in our area have been doing a great job in adverse conditions ( still raining ) Trucks a queing at tip sites also so why join them anyway just stay home and assist neighbours and tidy up own area. Some people do not like my approach so I have told them there are others of higher priority than their untidy yard.
Cheers

As an add on to previous post neighbours had their roofs smashed off by flying trampolines and outdoor furniture'

gjs feel really saddened for you folk up there i know its only material stuff but its really sad to see your castles damaged and all the love that people put into their homes damaged or destroyed terrable stuff hope everything gets back to normal for your family as quick as possable and for the rest of the banana benders that where effected .
Glad to hear you are ok GJS.
I live 10mins away from the gap and we were unscathed got a call from my inlaws sunday night who live at the gap asking if I could come and help on Monday morning with the clean up as its bad damaged roof water damage crap everywhere.
I was totally unprepared for the massive destruction drove over settlement road Holy !@#$ spent two hours trying various routes but was unable to reach my inlaws every street had trees down power lines everywhere smashed houses, damaged cars.
The task ahead of the emergency services is massive as Gjs said they hit the ground running in adverse conditions with the help of residents all the major roads were cleared as quick as possible allowing access to all the back streets there is so much work to do the electricity network has to be rebuilt and they have to attack it street by street as access allows.
Inlaws got power on last night Well done to Energex, SES, Army, police, Fire service and all volunteers and the residents who pulled together to help each other out
i guess that black bit in rthe radar was the really bad stuff.....when u see a lot of red thats a down pour but to have a big black bit thats damage control as was seen on the tv...good luck up there u need it...
Thank you Admin and Bgs

Every time we throw a branch out the council are there to pick it up, the tips are running 24/7 until further notice Emergency services can not be faulted as far as we are concered.
Constant SES,council and army personnel about if their help is needed.

Yep it's been a wild week up to date and tonight is supposed to be the worst of them all, not too bad at present mostly wind building up fingers crossed it will not happen, having said that last sunday came up out of nowhere. Most activity at the momment is getting sandbags on tarps to stop them blowing away tonight.
Amazing the amount of damage a trampoline can do from somwhere else. finders keepers rule does not apply here as it is also a write off.
Neighbours are starting to reward me with cartons of beer for the help ( chainsaw etc ).I assured them I did not want anything just wanted to to help secure their properties.
I will be sharing it back with them for christmas. some of the devoted started putting up decorations weeks ago have lost them poor buggars spend a fortune every year to please the kids, my granchildren love the show this time of year.
Some have had enough and left, as the damage is done and just want to get away in case these latest storm warnings materialise.
Cheers
Good to have someone to chat to away from the event.
