Looks like the drought has finished in Southern Australia. We just had our annual rainfall almost, in 1 night

Good to hear drought is hopefully over in South Oz

Qld North doesnt have a problem of drought

North Qld prepares for flash flooding as cyclone intensifies
By Meg Purtell and Andree Withey

    Updated Fri Mar 6, 2009 1:23pm AEDT

The system is about 310 kilometres off the coast of Cairns.

Rain in Cairns has intensified over the past few hours as cyclone Hamish moves closer to the coast.

The category 2 system is expected to develop into a category 3 later today but is forecast to continue moving south before it makes landfall.

A cyclone warning has been issued from Cape Melville to Cardwell, while a watch is in place from Cardwell to Saint Lawrence.

Weather bureau spokesman Gordon Banks says residents should be prepared in case of flash flooding.

"A look at the radar shows that there's some significantly heavy areas of rainfall associated with this system," he said.

An alert has been issued for boat owners along the coast to activate their cyclone plans.

Cairns Regional Council spokesman Alan Blake from the says council teams have been out all week checking drains.

"With any flash flooding that comes through, it usually brings a lot of trash, a lot of greenery down with it and blocks up drains," he said.

"Now our crews have been to all of those grates to make sure that they're clear and we'll have that team running right throughout the weekend."

North Queensland is still recovering from floods caused by cyclone Ellie last month, with much of the state's north-west also still under water.

    'Dangerous system'

Weather bureau spokesman Geoff Doueal says it is a dangerous system that is likely to get bigger.

"It's likely if it does reach landfall somewhere towards the Bowen-Mackay area, I would think probably by late Sunday or Monday at this stage," he said.

"At this stage it looks like it will be at its closest point to Cooktown overnight tonight, maybe some time around midnight and probably at its closest point to Cairns if the modelling is correct ... at about midday tomorrow," he said.

Emergency Management Queensland spokesman Mike Shapland says preparations are well underway.

"This is the third time - if it comes across the coast - that we would have dealt with one this season," he said.

State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers have started stockpiling sandbags in Cairns and local disaster management groups are on alert.

Hamish is expected to be felt in the Whitsundays region within the next 48 hours and could make landfall early next week.

Emergency Management Queensland is also holding briefings in Brisbane.

Weather was pretty cool today! 26 C.

What I have noticed at an increasing level is the intensity of the sun!

I am either getting old or working in the open sun has got a lot hotter!

Energy sapping, core temperature heating horrible is all I can say!

    Anyone else?

these rains in melbourne are great, tanks are full,11000 litres of liquid gold, booked out for months with the loyals(as geoff says),pure gold that keeps one trucking in the dry times.

to much rain in the burnt out catchment areas of victoria could cause flash flooding with lots of debris such as fallen trees making it hazardous, take care in the bush areas.

YES, funny about that Geoff, so many people think they are regular clients with 4,5,6 weekly & i will call you when i need you to cut the grass attitudes! MAYBE I will have to change my invoices to:
    Reg.loyal m.e.s,
    Reg.m.e.s
    Casual m.e s
with appropriate pricing and service scales! etc etc
Its time to show the loyal clients what "service" is all about. The rest fall in the category of "will get to you on a scale of how much you cared about me"

I think i am getting a little handle of what u guys in the rain rain areas with the grass growing like crazy....on a smaller scale here after many months of mowing dry dead grass in se melbourne finially the stuff is greening and growing...nice to mow actual grass and taking the clippings to the tip because the recycle bin wont take it all.....very nice indeed and even learning how to catch wet grass a skill developed over 20 years and recently forgotten , liking riding a bike though u soon pick up the skill to fly through the wet stuff.... bookings now nearly full so things are ticking especially now the 900 bucks we are starting to see that as well with makeovers on the rise...gets boring doesnt it

Looked out across the valley from one of my weekly regular gardening and mowing clients.
5 weeks ago we were getting ready to evacuate as the Upwey fire was on its way towards us. 1 week ago, I was still looking out at a valley of brown, dry grass. Today not only were we getting rained on, but I was looking out at what was starting to nicely green up.

Thank goodness for rain, we still need another 5 or 6 inch's, but it is a start.

    Not quite Black Bear.

We have had some good falls but nothing drought smashing yet. Still dry but things are starting to grow agin. We need good follow up rains now.
