Rescuers fight to rescue freighter crew

Thousands of people are lining Newcastle's beaches in driving rain and gale-force winds as rescue helicopters attempt to retrieve the Filipino crew of a coal freighter which has run aground in heavy seas.

The MV 'Pasha Bulker' had 22 crew members on board when it ran aground in wild surf off Nobbys Beach this morning after getting into trouble near the extrance to Newcastle Harbour.

ABC Local Radio's Simone Thurtell says conditions are extreme as the rescue operation begins.

"I can't stress to you how strong the wind is down here on the beach, the sand is whipping and the choppers are certainly going to be buffeted around as they try this rescue operation," she said.

Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate says he has implemented the city's emergency plan to deal with the crisis.

He says attempts will be made to move the ship out to sea before assistance is given to the crew.

"The process is that the police take charge, and they'll work with the port authorities, no doubt, and council is there to back up and help with traffic control and so forth," he said.

"I can assure the people of Newcastle that the emergency plan for this area is very strong, it's a good plan, it's revised on a regular basis."

Nobbys Surf Club president Dave Edwards says the conditions are quite extreme.

"It reminds me of the 1974 cyclone conditions that we had here when a ship ran aground up here in Stockton Bight, and that ship was called the Signa and that ship stayed there for evermore," he said.

The Newcastle Port Corporation has put all ships on restricted movements due to massive seas and gale force winds.

THOUSANDS of residents in the NSW Hunter region have been urged to abandon homes before a torrent of floodwater that was expected to hit the region last night.

The death toll from the three days of wild storms reached nine yesterday as police found the body of Adamstown man Wayne Bull, 45, who was swept into a stormwater drain in the Newcastle suburb of Lambton after getting out of his car on Griffith Road on Friday night.

At the peak of Friday’s wild weather, five members of the same family were swept to their deaths when a section of the Old Pacific Highway collapsed under their vehicle and it was hit by a “wall of water” at Somersby, near Gosford.

The bodies of Adam Holt, 30, and his long-term partner Roslyn Bragg, 29, were recovered from Piles Creek yesterday, while the bodies of their two daughters, Madison, 2, and Jasmine, 3, and their nephew Travis Bragg, 9, were recovered Saturday.

Further north, Robert and Linda Jones were killed when their vehicle was washed off a flooded bridge at Clarence Town, while a Heddon Greta man, 29, died when a tree fell on his ute at Brunkerville, Lake Macquarie, about 6pm on Saturday.

Prime Minister John Howard yesterday offered additional financial support and his condolences, to people affected by the storms.

“I know I speak for every Australian in saying that the country is thinking of you and we’re heartbroken by the loss of lives and the tragic circumstances in which a number of people have lost their lives ... (it’s) the, tragically, human side of something such as this,” he said.

While the torrential downpours and gale-force winds of Friday eased yesterday, the focus turned to the dangers posed by floodwaters, with the Hunter Valley centres of Maitland and Singleton preparing for the worst.

The SES yesterday issued an evacuation order for residents of central Maitland, South Maitland and Lorne after revised predictions that floodwaters were to peak at 5cm above the levee by 9pm yesterday.

Residents are advised to be out of their homes by 8pm, SES spokesman Philip Campbell said.

Rossco - I was up there today & know what you mean.

We have a van at Ocean Beach & the place was absolutely trashed.

We were lucky - only superficial damage. Unlike several across from us that had a couple of old gums flatten them.

Saw plenty of firies & SES from all over Sydney up there too - keep up the good work fellas.

Hi all, Just got off B.O.W site looks like a good time to take a week off. They have forecast rain for Melbourne for the week [sunday to friday ].I'm more interested in snow as it means more run off to the catchment areas. Not only does it helps us,but it gives the moutain people a living at the same time. So we have been doing it tough in the last year or so, but rember where there is bad times there is good times.
So remember or colleges in an around the Newcastle area that can't work, But i wrecken or turn will come. Then in spring we won't have time to scratch or selve's let alone scratch someone else's back. So if you have started up your business in the so called 10 year drought and still maintaining a good business congratulations
But remember how you started and support that person or business, Because in the long run we all need each other to make it really work all the way aroundl.

    Question Re: hows the weather

I thought we had it hard

    Lake Superior America

The larger of two ferries that shuttles people between Grand Portage and Isle Royale National Park won't be making its runs this summer because of low water levels in Lake Superior

Lake superior has dropped 2/1/2 feet past 8years because of the drought in that area 16 trillion gallons has disappered thats 2 thousand gallons per human on the planet

    Ring a bell

    Overview
Not only is Lake Superior the largest of the Great Lakes, it also has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world. It contains almost 3,000 cubic miles of water, an amount that could fill all the other Great Lakes plus three additional Lake Eries. With an average depth approaching 500 feet, Superior also is the coldest and deepest (1,332 feet) of the Great Lakes. The lake stretches approximately 350 miles from west to east, and 160 miles north to south, with a shoreline almost 2,800 miles long. The drainage basin, totaling 49,300 square miles, encompasses parts of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario. Most of the Superior basin is sparsely populated, and heavily forested, with little agriculture because of a cool climate and poor soils.

Risk of sounding like a big poof, i havent been working in the rain as my customers wouldnt want their lawn ripped up by my mower, also pruning in the rain isnt right cos ive prunes wet bushes before and when its dry they look stupid.

I use a self propelled Honda and it skids in the lawn and makes black marks. Grass isnt growing anyways so i can only get aorund when its not raining.

So how do you work? Im getting poor and work is backing up. Im a wuss arnt I.

Bright side come spring ill be busy.
