I was speaking to mate in Cairns just now who knows someone very high up in the SES there. Apparently after all this is over they will be readjusting the cyclone scale as Yasi is actually a Cat 6 but they don't go that high. Cat 5 is the highest the have at present but they reckon after this one there will be a Cat 6.

    ya gotta love Qld.

Do a few hours trimming in the mist in the morning, then jump on the ztr when the temp gets to a sultry 25 deg.

Was a bloody stinker here today. The temp got to 36 where we were at but the humidity was way way up there. Reminded me of working in FNQ at the very tail iof the dry season as the wet was coming. We had to do the retirement village today so it was hard yakka.

I thought I was going to have to put my offsider down. He was losing fluid at a rapid rate and when he started showing the first signs of heat stress I plonked him under a shady tree and told him to stay. I finished off the rest and he was still crook. Had me a bit worried but he came good as I was loading up the bags so I put the gun away.

To his credit he didn't want to leave me by myself but I wasn't having him working when he was like that. Man is he never going to live this down. I am 10 years his senior and worked him into the ground. It was bloody hot and humid and if I had not spent so much time working in FNQ I would have probably been under the tree with him. Of course now I am rehydrating with amber fluid.

Yeah it was a bit humid today, did a big garden cleanup, my sidekick was struggling as well.
He has more stamina than me in a burst but string a few warm days together and he struggles. Bit harder to look for symptoms of dehydration because he's a bit vague at the best of times The main thing that hits me is the odour that comes of my sidekick when the weather heats up almost knocks me out when we get back in the car, hits you like a freight train bought him a 6 pack of deodorant at xmas, trying to be a bit subtle, didn't work He is a hard worker though, just not the sharpest tool in the shed.
The last few years i've been spending my holidays in Cairns, sitting on a balcony drinking beer, watching the council workers maintaining The Esplanade, long pants, long sleeves, gloves and wide brimmed hats in 34 degrees high humidity, Thinking bugger that. Then my wife tells me she wants us to move here next year

Mate if your missus wants to move there go for it. It will only take you a couple of years to get used to it and then you wont look back. I have been trying to get my missus too say yes to going ther for years. Just aint gonna happen. She hates humidity.

Funny about your offsider. Sounds similar to mine. I think his big problem today was he sweated out more than he took in. We were halfway through and he was drenched from sweat. I mean he looked like he had jumped in the river. Same thing with normal stuff. Because he sweats easily he is a bit on the nose sometimes

Comes with practise Geoff...it is simply acclimatising yourself. And working the day to stay out of the heat and humidity when it is at it's worse. I was stationed in Karumba in 1992 and was by myself because my boss had gone to take over the Thursday Is station as the old bloke had cracked up.

They kept sending me probationaries from Brisbane to help out. As quick as they could send the up I would send them back. Only had a couple work out. I would tell them to drink and keep hydrated...but I am not thirsty....heard this many a time...plus the fact most were young straight out of Uni and had never worked in their life

been finishing at 12 or thereabouts every day this week. Apparently Sydneys hottest week on record. Sydney's west where I live and work has been between 35 and 42 every day since last friday. Night time temps haven't got much below 30.....And the bloody humidity as I mentioned in another post has been up around 400% I reckon (hehe well over 80% at least). And the beer is like angels pissing on your tonsils!
