Default Dual axle and tyre wear.

Hi all, for those who use dual axle trailers, whats your tyre wear like, I seem to go thru tyres way too quick.

I have no issue with getting the odd puncture at the tip and charge my green waste accordingly, but I do seem to get general wear really quick.

On avg apart from punctures I have to replace a tyre every 6 weeks, and these are supposedly light truck grade tyres.

    Hi Cam
I'm getting 12 months out of a set of tyres on mine, maybe more. Mine are only car tyres too not LT but I'm probably only doing 250 to 300ks a week and a total weight of probably 1t. A couple of things I can think of that may contribute to tyre wear would be tyre pressure. Being a lt tyre and the weight you carry those pressures should be well up near the max ( prob 65 psi check it on the tyre though ) and the other would be the spread of the axle. Having the rocker box widens the axles so turning corners the tyres drag a lot more than one with just slipper springs. But burning through that many tyres isn't right.
    Thanks Mike

I still have 3 original Tyers from when we bought the trailer 6 years ago. The 4 was torn open on a buried culvert.

We are running 2-3 tonne each day and average 300km a week with the trailer.

I insist that the tyre shop balance all trailer tyres and we keep the tyres at the correct pressure. Also we replace bearing at 6months regardless of wear and bushes and pins yearly.

The rate you are replacing tyres is rediculous and as I'm sure you know un economical. You need to be asking the tyre shop what's going on. Also look to see if any of your suspension or axel parts are bent or damage

    Brake (dragging) or bearing issues?
Does the wheel on left side of picture have no bearing cap? -- or my old age eyes not seeing right?
If the bearing is exposed it may not be in a good state.

And i dont mean each tyre lasts 6 weeks...but i am buying a tyre every 6 or so weeks just due to it being stuffed....eventually they just explode.
good point mike, and knowing that u know my set up first hand ill be more mindful on pressures

I got rid of my dual axle trailer but when I had it and doing reverse turns up the driveway (or out of the driveway) you could hear the tyres rubbing/skidding sideways across the road surface. I didn't have it long enough to notice the rate of tyre wear but didn't like it much. Mine was similar to the one in the pictures. i.e. rocker suspension. Maybe get someone else to drive or reverse and watch whats happening to the tyres at a slow speed when you are reversing at home or wherever you keep it. It's in the nature of the design for the tyres to rub like that but maybe there is some subtle change to your driving technique along with tyre pressures.

I go through a lot of tyres as well. I think the wider the trailer is the worse it wears. Turning in tight circles is really hard on them.

Steveo is right , my driveway has skid marks were I turn in and out. Also going around round a bouts and as you would know Cameron , the casey council wont be happy until they have a round a bout at every street intersection
