Where are the anti-gst ad campaigns from the miners? They campaigned long and hard that the mining tax would destroy the economy and they got it scrapped. So what's the difference this time?

You probably will never see one because:
    1. Businesses effectively don't pay GST - they collect GST from (some) purchasers on behalf of govt and get any GST they pay refunded.

    2. If their sales are exports (thats the majority of stuff sold by the miners), then it is GST exempt!

    3. GST being increased / broadened is the pretext for decreasing the corporate income tax rate ..

So there is every reason the big corporates and miners would love to see GST increased
    Hence their silence.

    I beg to differ.....

    1. GST registered businesses collect GST from nearly all their sales (there are exceptions, like on fresh food)
    2. The GST they paid in purchases is not usually refunded - it is credited to them against the GST they collected and are expected to remit.
Only when the credits are more than that collected does a business get a GST refund - which is why it can be advantageous to register when you start - to claim back all the GST on equipment purchased.

GST is about who/where the product/service is consumed. Can't charge GST on a service/product supplied offshore (generally)

That is true, but interesting that govt is trying/going to collect (or have the Amazon's, ebay etc collect) GST on online *offshore* purchases (like downloaded software, music, ip, etc).
Likewise I am puzzled why overseas airfares (or even os holiday packages) which are PURCHASED (supplied?) in Aust are not hit with GST.

I'll stand corrected and I hope I am but I will be very surprised if we come out of this without GST on food. There is already talk of compensating people for an increase, well what is the bloody point of making things even more complicated. Let people stand on their own two feet without going cap in hand to the bloody government.
