Not exactly from the mowing / gardening business area, but a good friend in Canberra who used to have his own very successful IT business (he sold it some years ago to a big company, then became an IT industry consultant & CEO and now retired) explained to me once for it to be worth hiring an additional staff member in his business, they had to bring in (ie net earnings) of 220% of their salary. This took into account their direct salary, on-costs such as super, long service etc etc), the 'cost to his time' (that he would otherwise spend with clients, project work etc) in supervising them, and a small margin of 'profit' for all business effort involved. Robin said to me, 'anything less than that and I am just as well off not getting bigger &/or needing extra staff'.
