Default Honda Hrx 217 won't free wheel backwards

Hi all hope some one can help
I have a Honda Hrx 217 it's about 15 months old goes great except latley it won't free wheel pulling it backwards
Have lubed up the gears in the wheels with dry lube, have lubed and adjusted the cables
Lubed the arm where the cable attaches the gear box
Taken it to two mower mechanics with no real prognosis of what's wrong
So before I scrap it because it gives me the ships not free wheeling backwards and often locks up completely
Has anyone some ideas or have experienced this problem before I'm stumped other than pulling the gearbox down ...
    Thanks

there is a return spring near the gearbox you need to clean or adjust.
Had the same problem with my first HRX back in 2012

Check the lever at the box is returning fully and not jammed up with a gum nut or cr@p.
Make sure you haven't stretched the outer cable of the gearbox control, and it's stopping the lever on the box from returning all the way when released.

Let us know how you go, fixed or not.
    "Can't" is a dirty 4 letter word.
If someone says "Can't" , take the "T" off the end and brew it.
Sip on a mugfull, relax, and take a look at what you've got left to work with.

    Hey guys
I blew the crap out of the return spring and lubed
Slightly better so maybe on the right track
On the week end I'll have a closer look
Maybe a pressure clean and lube

Gave the whole under mower a good hose down especially the gearbox and linkages then lubed with silicone spray
It's good maybe 80% free up but still a little bit of friction there
    Still better than it was

on the victas/bushrangers etc it usually is the drive pawls/over-run clutch etc in the drive wheels themselves...not familiar with honda though.....

You'll have to pull the wheel off and have a look. It might just need some lube on the pawl & pinion.
Otherwise it might be the teeth on the drive pinion and/or the wheel worn down and occasionally not meshing properly.
Pawls & pinions are cheap to replace, but new wheels are a bit pricey.

Have some new speed washers ready so you can put the wheels back on if it only needs a lube. Usually can't re-use the old ones.

instead of lube i got told by a engineer to use graphite powder, as it is dry & won't collect grit .i also reuse old circlips, they work at least 4-5 times b4 i replace.
