    Default Compact Pro electrics repair

Have had an ongoing problem with the gravely since fairly new, intermittent starting issue...sometimes starts 1st hit, then it is click click click on the solenoid. Finally decided to trace it (with all the recent rain, time to get onto it) it was dirty contacts in the ignition switch plug. So I cleaned the terminals under the switch with sandpaper, hosed out the plugs female terminals with electronic cleaning aerosol and fitted it up with a rubber boot made from a bicycle tube - this is the problem with the compact pro, the ignition switch is totally exposed and a bad design flaw on an otherwise brilliant machine...l know of 2 others who have them and both have the same starting problem

photo shows the inner tube offcut snug around the ignition switch and tied off around the leads with a cable tie

    That's a coincidence.
Mine's been playing up and have lately been able to just tap the top of the solenoid to get it going. I did an acreage this morning no problem and then tried to start it in town after lunch, and it was just dead. No clicks or anything to the starter like normal, but the PTO switch was working.

I decided then that the switch must be the problem after all. Messed with it a bit and it fired up.
I've had mine apart before & gave the terminals a clean up. Might be time to do it again.

Don't like the thought of getting a new switch from Allpower. It took 3 weeks just to get a new deck belt.

its an Indak ignition switch in mine, pretty universal l'd think.....with mine, l think it was the crud in the female plug, not the terminals on the switch itself - use something like this to spray out the crud https://www.bunnings.com.au/wd-40-sp...eaner_p6100409

Yep Paul, I used that stuff on every connection I could find when I put the new starter on a while back.
All was good for a while and then it started playing up again.

I've got a couple of winter time jobs to do on mine too. Minor leaks at the sump gasket and one of the transaxles.

My CompactPro is looking a bit naked tonight.
Looks like the engine needs a new pto seal & crankcase gasket, and the Hydro needs resealing.

I got the Gravely back together again.
Ended up just needing a pto seal on the engine and an O ring on the base of the charge pump of the transaxle.
Replaced all oils & filters and oil hoses for the hydros.

Gave it all new belts and replaced one blade spindle.

    Good for another 1000 hrs

been pointed out that it could fill with water, so will coat it in lanolin grease or something and loosen the cable tie

finally sorted the starting issues, got a mate who teaches auto electrics and picked his brain......starter assist relay - had everything in the shed, an hour later and its finally working the way a $10g mower should.
l should've asked an expert 2 years ago......

Mine had a starter relay from new but it's wired a bit differently to that.
