Thread: Accepting Cheque Payments

    Default Accepting Cheque Payments

    Hi Guys,
I only have 2 people paying by cheque. I have managed to convert all but these two who want to pay this way for their own reasons.

I will be changing banks soon and depositing these 2 cheques will be a 40 minute round trip - even with putting it in an ATM.

What is an acceptable charge to add to cheque payments as I cannot say I don't accept them.

I was thinking $15 added to each cheque payment. This will still not cover my costs of travel to deposit them

If I lose them so be it but prefer not to.

    Any thoughts?

I've had the same issues in the past. I gave them the option to change to electronic bank transfer, pay cash or accept a fee for processing a cheque. They generally opt for the transfer. One strata still operates with cheque and will not change despite the strata secretary wanting to go electronic. Yeah its a pain and I guess you have to communicate with them the problems with cheques. Depends on how much you value the job as to how bard you take the fight.

Just posted a invoice to a customer with a note "A $5 Charge for Postal Invoices will be introduced on 1st July 2017"

Time is money the customer needs to pay for all of it.

Let us know how you go.

When stamps went to $1, I sent a note out saying I'll be charging $2 for postal invoices. One elderly 4weekly client that pays by cheque thought that a bit rough and wanted me to invoice her every second cut. Effectively taking possibly 3 months to get paid for 2 cuts. I stood my ground and she's paying the $2. Million dollar property by the way.

Are stamps $1 now? I've still been using 70c stamps. Only post to a couple of irregular clients twice a year. They must have got delivered as I got paid OK.

I'm down to just 2 clients that pay by cheque. My local bank branch has closed here, so have to deposit cheques & cash at the Post Office. Probably no less convenient than doing it at the bank.

Just back after walking the dog!. I'm with you now Geoff, sorry you mean the resi stuff.

Benefits of having family - brother and recently wife work with you in the business Lots of ways to structure things to benefit everyone.
Also part of the plan to get off the tools as I am purchasing more commercial equipment this year.
Don't want to have to run a resi business and commercial business while I start and build a slashing business also.

you don't need to bank cash, as long as its recorded in your book-keeping - not much choice with cheques, bloody antiquated things these days

Yeah, worked it out eventually Brain a little foggy tonight!!!

Only run the commercial these days Geoff - only 1 paid by petty cash monthly @60.50 so it does not have to go to Sydney accounts. So no need to walk in and get in line and wait, wait ............

That's what I am doing presently with my loan Broker. In the deep end and some new toys to play with. Just got some old gear to clear out of garage. Unfortunately it probably won't go until September/October as business hots up with spring weather

You should tell that to some of the big boys in the tax office Geoff - Apparently some "tricks of the trade" some of them knew about

I do not accept cheque payment at all. We are in the 21 century now, so people need to move on with the tides. Most shops will not take cheques anymore fear the cheque will bounce. I have been asked if I take cheque payments by a few new customers in the past and explained to them that it is not a convenient payment for my business and that my preferred method is Cash for the first 4 cuts, then Direct Deposit (for regulars only) or by using my Mobile Paypal Here Card Reader on the day.

Yeah I am similar. Used to have a $15 charge but even that was a pain especially when the client only paid the money on the job not the cheque processing fee. Now dont accept them. Cash or electronic. Only way to go
