you have scalped it down thats great, using the mower is the best option for kikuya.
cut height for kikuya, i cut at 50mm green all summer, no weeds and doesnt biuld up thatch, my mower is either the Ride on or a Honda216 both are heavey enough for the wheels to sink in and keep it at that level. I dont have the dethach at all. A light mower wont keep kikuya down and will need dethaching annually
2 weeks lawn will look beautiful,3-4 weeks it will be destroyed
Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

Dont expect it beautiful. Just want it growing well.
When he does get into it too much I will put him in his dog run - approx 30 mtrs where he can rip up all the plants. Will save me a little work
why dont you put down the dog hahah naaaa why dont you consider the tough turf from bunnings its fake grass but looks the real thing easy to install....give it some thought ...
I spend most of my money on beer and horses, I just waste the rest....

I do a wipy flat edge around the lawn at a height that looks good and set the mower to that on new lawns. I guess an estimate across all my lawns would be a #5 using a Honda 216D
