    Kiwi60

Good time to start as the season has started to change with new customer calls coming in, along with current customers now booking reduced gaps between next mows. That's inland along the Murray in my case.

I started by reading the forum's vast knowledge base in depth all night, night after night after a career wind down change.
I researched and contacted Jim's and their Area Chief, she was really nice and helpful whilst putting no pressure on to join. Spoke to their most snr JImbo operator in town too.
But thought I can do it, yep l'll make it happen with my skills/commitment & Indy forum. The rest is history now and still enjoy it and enjoy doing my own thing.

    One hint amongst the many,
ln the beginning you take on anything to get the income no matter how small and get the business up 'n' running.
Don't be afraid to knock back a job if you feel it's beyond you or you feel like you could be had - you can sense sometimes its better to walk.

    Hope all goes well..
    Cheers Garry

    Best advice Gazza.

I still take on some horrid jobs, those horrid jobs have landed me with some good word of mouth jobs and regular clients.

Learn to quote properly and never undercut yourself. I still have some bad days where I have not quoted accordingly, but getting rarer by the day.

If someone says that they can get ....... person to do it cheaper, LET THEM get that person. They are tight and not worth your business, as they are the ones who want everything for nothing and will pick on every little bit of your work just to gt you to reduce your price.

There is so much advice on this forum, And so many different ways of doing things, Just try them all and see which one/s works for you.

    Cheers Damien

You will get told my many that you should work a certain rate! Work a rate that makes you money, gains you experience or teaches you to up that rate!
Work out what the going rate is in your area and then use that to your advantage.

You need to do more than mow lawns, and then work out something you want to specialise in that you can make top dollar with!

You also need to learn how to get the phone to ring AND answer your phone.
If I said only 1 thing it would be this. If you can get the phone to consistently ring you are well on your way.
You advertise all year, busy, slow, wet, dry, drought, floods! Try many different forms of advertising and see what works best, but also don't just stick to that.
When you can do this well you start to gain confidence and then the ball starts rolling. If you get enough calls you learn to quote and do work often enough to gain experience and get skilled enough to compete for the good work at better rates
