Does anyone on here do mowing or snipping for schools?
Are there any special procedures you follow?
Do you mow during school hours or after hours, it can be scheduled for between breaks I suppose.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

we have four schools all sec colleges and the only way is the weekends.....dont have to worry about kids touchin the gear , or hurting a kid with the whipper ..just make sure u have the a day off through the week....daylight saving u can do after hours but we reckon no kids no problems...make sure u have a police check if through school hours....
I thought most schools had their own full time gardeners/grounds person might be wrong though.
Edit see previous post i was wrong.
the tihight ones have their own people but the smart ones use contractors no super no holidays no equipment no slackos.. the contractors provides the great sevice if not then they get another one till they get the best....
most Principals are managers thats why the smart ones use contractors ...
Spoke to the school today, weekends or after 3.30 pm
yes all of our schools are done weekends , just have day off during the week , one of our schools has to be every week which puts the pressure on but with help u manage to get a day off...tried schools hours but teachers hate the sound of a back pac blower during class and lunch times are even harder with stones flying at the little angles you know the ones that let your ride tyres down or take the key
Geoff just wondering if these are government or private schools?
I come from the grounds department from a private school background and its totaly different from what you said.
They looked at contracting our positions out about 3 years ago and decided not to as you only have the contractors in when they need to be and all they do is what they have in there contract. Plus from talking to other schools who went the contract way they all say that contractors dont have the care factor like internal workers do.
(Not having a crack there nether)
And the all have reverted to internal maintenence staff again for those reasons and were (all rounders) eg in a day you can blow the paths, rake leaves, move boxes, fix paving, put signs in mow the grass and much more. And they see that as worth the extra costs.
Anyway thats just the other side of the fence just thought i throw it in there.
Both private and government... I do agree with you though , our contract is based on gardening and mowing which is timed based , so all the little things like blowing gutters , raking beds , etc can be acheived . If there is more to do then we get paid more , but the most important aspect is when the principle comes in monday morning , the school looks great . So i guess our contract are more than mow run and blow
If you are in Victoria and want to play with the big boys all the Council and Victorian Government tenders can be found on the following web site e-Tender (http://www.tenders.vic.gov.au)
Yeah, was in a big school {8} after golf the other day.
They are hard work when you have to compete with young bucks.
A disputed second round shout resulted in a last to skull shouts decision.
Glad to report it was me to dig last.
Hic!
you guys have no idea how complex a schools officer position is. if you did then you would no that we (yes i am one) are not slackers. we are expected to do all the mowing and quite a bit of the "trade" work for the crapy wage we earn.
I was offered a near full time JOB (earning a living) at a school a couple of weeks ago. I decided against it. I would have had to give my business (making money) up and work full time.
I've had plans for my business for a few years and everything is on track.
Unfortunately most people are too busy earning a living to have any time to make any money.
