    Default David's bookkeeping corner.

This seems a much more appropriate place to discuss all things bookkeeping.

    Default Exit strategy/succession planning

We spend considerable effort starting and building up our business. Often the very last thing we consider is how we would extract our self from it if wanted or needed. (sickness, family, finance, retirement!)

Unless you plan on dieing at your post, as it were, it makes sense to consult a specialist in this area to ensure you have options open to you, so rather than have to formulate a plan 'on the hop', it's more a case of implementing one of the strategies already decided upon.

To get you started, you will find some useful information on the subject here :
    http://www.ewowebsites.com/categories/Exit-Strategy

This subject is worth giving consideration.

Default Payroll outsourcing just makes sense!

Yes, getting payroll right can be a minefield.

Legislative reform includes many requirements relating to payroll: records that you must keep, items that you must display on a payslip and payslip delivery within one day of payment! Penalties apply for non-compliance. Leave the compliance complexities of payroll administration to Jim's Bookkeeping professionals and their strategic partner, ADP -- and you can focus on your core business and profit generating activities.

Why use ADP Payline for payroll?
Reduce risk – human error, non-compliance to legislation, improve time management
    Save time on payroll preparation
Increase the protection of sensitive private payroll data
Focus on profit generating activities that directly contribute to your bottom line
Achieve cost-efficiencies by re-allocating resources to areas such as sales and marketing.
Remove headaches associated with meeting legislative requirements

Just minutes to process allowing you to focus on your business !

    Default ADP payline

    Who is ADP?
ADP is the worlds largest provider of payroll and human resource solutions, with over 30 years of experience in Australia and the only organisation that can provide a complete solution for all companies.

    How does ADP Payline work?
Clients provide ADP Payline with the hours their employees worked for the given pay period by phone, fax or internet. ADP Payline processes the pay and looks after all the administrative aspects of payroll.

How do the employees get paid?
ADP Payline can pay wages directly into employee bank accounts via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).* Alternatively, ADP Payline can also produce an Australian Banking Association (ABA) file to upload into bank software.

Can ADP Payline advise us of Award changes?
All ADP clients receive free access to the Australian Business Workplace Advice Line that provides Industrial Relations advice on topics including award changes.

    Does ADP Payline provide training?
Yes, ADP offers free client training at your local ADP premises to all of our clients. Attendance is not limited, so clients may come for their first training or a refresher course, as many times as they like. How would I receive payroll reports? Reports are available either in hard copy delivered to your office or online after each pay process.

What happens if I need to terminate an employee?
Notify your Payline consultant or ADP Payline Solution Centre and we will calculate the termination pay for your approval.* ETP Payment Summary can also be produced.

    How does ADP Payline charge?
An invoice is produced at the end of each pay process with a processing charge per pay process and a per-employee cost plus any applicable delivery charges.* ADP PayLine only charges per the number of active employees on the payroll.

    Does ADP have any accreditation?
Yes, ADP has received certification under the ISO Quality Standard AS/NZ 9001:2000 Regn. No. 165.

If we decide to go ahead with ADP Payline, how long will it take to get us up and running on ADP?
It will take approximately two working weeks from the time ADP Payline receives your employee information to get your payroll up and running. You can assist us to speed up this process by using the Employee Upload File, completing the “EPS Client Deduction Form” per superannuation fund and making yourself available for a Welcome Call to guide you through the overall process. The overall timeline will be determined by your implementation consultant.

    Default Heating oil scam

Got a call on mobile late last year inviting me to invest in heating oil futures.
They promised that due to 'leveraging' and the fact that cost of heating oil increases (in US) toward end of winter, my $5,000 could easily return $100,000.

I played along with them (without parting with any monay), even allowing them to set up an online account - but I knew they were a scam from the start.

They couldn't or wouldn't answer some basic questions I found on the ASIC website :
    http://www.asic.gov.au/fido/fido.nsf...s?openDocument

If someone cold calls you offering financial services or products, protect yourself by asking these questions:
    1. What is your name, address and phone number?
    2. Do you hold an Australian financial services licence?
    3. What is the name of the company holding the licence?
    4. What is the licence number?
    5. What is the licence holder's address?
If the caller answers your questions
Make a note of the details so you can check the information after the call.
Before dealing with them any further, do these quick safety checks.
If the caller avoids your questions, or doesn't have a licence,
Do not deal with them. Hang up.

If they claim they don't need a licence because:
    They are based overseas
Hang up. Anyone ringing a person in Australia and offering financial advice or products must be licensed in Australia to do so.

Scams are definitely on the increase.

Remember : If it's just too good to be true, it likely is!

Default 10 Tips for Business Performance - TIP # 2 Watch your cashflow

    Watch your cashflow

Think of your business finances as a bucket of 'liquid' funds with cash coming in through taps of cash fees, collections of debt, additional funding, and cash going out through holes from payment of bills, equipment, Payroll and owner’s drawings. It is important to anticipate future demands on your cash from tax liabilities, business growth and day to day expenses. A cashflow budget will highlight periods of negative cashflow.

Holders of AFSL's and their authorised represenatives are bound by the Corporatations Act. Section 992A of the Corporations Act specifically prohibits cold calling/selling or promoting of financial products through unsolicited contact with prospective clients.

If you are contacted by someone who tries to do this, get their details and then advise them they are in Breach and you will report them to ASIC and the ACCC

Thanks for the confirmation - never accept unsolicited contact from a financial provider.

Would have loved to report them, but the callers would not give any details, not even a phone number, just a vague address in Singapore and a website!

you must wonder sometimes when you try to help people by posting spread sheets and other information and all some people can do is bag you
Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

    Default Self promotion

Thanks geoff - a closer look at forum rules shows I need to be more cautious re: advertising.

Of interest - forum rules states in part "Promotional text for a commercial product or service is ok, provided there are no price(s) of product(s) or service(s) listed."

Geoff - in your opinion, are avatars 'advertising'?
Is showing your phone number and/or email/web address in signature 'advertising'?
Perhaps all usernames should not relate to business names at all?

I will continue to talk up why every business needs a good bookkeeper to help them to thrive, even as I will also talk up why every home can benefit from a gardening service.

I will be pleased to continue passing on snippets of bookkeeping/business info that might be of benefit to members, even as I will continue to join in gardening related threads.
