should be good ongoing work there!
I've got a love/hate relationship with standards...

That's a lot of roses even for 3 people to do! Even at 10 roses-bushes each per hour that's 10 solid hours pruning per person.
Just saw the second lot of pics. Being standards are you pruning with secateurs or running the hedge trimmer over them David? Hedge trimmer will reduce the time by about 90%.
Yep, lots of ongoing work, all at hourly rate too. Yes I have a love hate with standards too, these people are paying a high standard. Problem with the standards here is the fact that we have a serious lot of suckers at ground level and some below the graft. The ones at ground level will be okay if they are not to thick the whipper snipper will fix them, otherwise it will be a lot of bending or kneeling to prune them off
Paul how could you suggest such a thing!! I am a professional LOL, yes that's what going to happen. Worst part will be the clean up as there is still lots of grass round the plants. I have sprayed with Verdict but the grass won't be dead by this Saturday.
The other big problem I had when cleaning up is that between the standards are bush roses, which don't show up in these pictures, very hard to get mower in between, also there is a watering system, so I have go back before Saturday and whipper snip around them all. If we don't get the roses all pruned on Saturday we will be back on Sunday.
How does everyone go about removing Pennisetum sp?
I've trimmed this previously with the hedge-trimmer from the base and up to reduce a bit of thickness from the sides but on the visit next week the owner wants them gone completely. Would a machete be a quicker option then hegde-trimmer as the trimmer really does struggle to chew through this stuff and I can imagine a chainsaw will get clogged pretty quick and be downright dangerous. Will probably burn-off what's left then dig-out or poison any clumps if they reshoot.

If you can get access with a 4wd put a snatch strap around one at a time and pull them out.
If that is not possible a brush cutter with a saw blade edge will rip them appart. Take it slow as it will make a bit of a mess. When they are low enough grab dig them out with Mark the Maddock.

X2 Redeye, I have a 52cc unit with blade permanetly attached, I will be using on Saturday to cut threw some wood weeds around soil piles that have shrubs in them.
Might look at getting a blade put on my old Jonsered trimmer now that I've got the Makita running. Thanks guys.
I would stand over it with a good mattock and just do a few circles less mess, just hard yakka.
Cane knife will do it. A good sharp one anyway.
