Kawasaki will go forever, smokey or not. The hydro slowing down is a little concern ...worst case scenario its a new pump and/or motor. dunno what its worth to replace as they are smaller hydros than whats on mine. they are a well built and balanced machine though and hard to break. ymmv

if you picked it up for 1000 like you offered and spent 1000 on the hydro (for arguments sake) you've got a commercial machine good for another 1000 hrs for $2000 ...just something to ponder. would take that mower over that graden you mentioned every day of the week ...even in that condition lol

In my search for the perfect zero turn if have looked at a bunch of diff second hand mowers to see what they are like after 250 to 300 hours

on the Zmasters every single one i have seen has been buggered.

    Shuddering hydros
    savage whining from the hydros
    blowing smoke
    weird vibrations
    generally bad noises

pretty scary considering how pricey they are compared to to similar/higher speced models that seem to be generally tougher

also toro seems to cost a bunch more to repair

I wouldnt get one unless your doing golf courses

They do seem to be the mower of choice for large companies, but I put that down to good marketing (which toro has smashed the market with) and boozy lunches with the managers rather than experience with a good product

the grounds masters and 360's are pretty amazing pieces of gear tho, but way to complicated for my liking.

could not disagree more sorry Oli, I drove mine like I stole it and all I have ever broken on it has been a pulley mount. Apart from consumables that's all its cost me with 1800 odd hrs on it. I have worked on plenty of zmasters including the exmark catcher variety and can not fault them. Every bit as good as a 72 series for the size. Comparing to a 717a JD (which would be its comparable) it is stronger in the spindles, hydros and chassis. Feel free to have a ride on mine if you are ever in the area. As for repairs, full service including hydros cost me $550 odd at the end of winter (pre spring once over) and I shouldn't have to put a spanner to it til the end of summer. Only toros I would stray from are the front decks such as the 228+328D series, which is where JD shine. ymmv.
