The Official Australian Ode Of Remembrance

The Offical 'Ode To The Fallen' is taken from the fourth stanza of Laurence Binyons famous poem, 'For The Fallen'.

Laurence Binyon was born in Lancaster, England in 1869. He attended Oxford University where he won the Newdigate prize for poetry.

By the 21st September 1914, when England was already suffering appalling casualties in France and Belgium, the Times Newspaper published Binyon's poem, 'The Fallen'. Binyon had written it in despair over the mounting casualty figures. The poem became widely popular in England and also in Australia and New Zealand.

Binyon wrote the poem while he was employed at the British Museum, it would not be until later, in 1916, that Binyon would finally go to the Western Front to serve as a hospital orderly and witness the carnage personally.

Binyon returned from the war and it horrors to work once again for the British Museum, he died in 1943.

In Australia and New Zealand The 'Ode' is recited whenever the Fallen are commemorated. In service clubs all over Australia it is custoomary to be Up Standing and silent when the Ode is read. This custom is strictly observed nightly in all Returned & Service Clubs.

    For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
    As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end they remain.

A poem to read for ANZAC day.

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the RSL,
    Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
    In his exploits with his buddies;
    They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
    His tales became a joke,
    All his mates listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
    For a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife..
    For he lived an ordinary,
    Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
    Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
    'Tho a Soldier died today.

    When politicians leave this earth,
    Their bodies lie in state,
    While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
    Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

    Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
    And cons his fellow man?

    Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
    And offers up his life?

    The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
    Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

    While the ordinary Soldier,
    Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
    And perhaps a pension, small.

It's so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
Went to battle, but we know,

    It is not the politicians
    With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
    That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
    With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
    With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
    Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
    We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
    That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days..

    Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
    "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
    A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank cheque made payable to ' Australia ', ' New Zealand ', or any other God fearing country for an amount "up to and including my life".

That is Honour, and there are way too many people in this WORLD who no longer understand it.

Another good one by the same poet

    I SAW THE SOLDIERS MARCHING
    by A. Lawrence Vaincourt

I saw the soldiers marching, one drear November day,
Those heroes bold, from wars of old, in countries far away.
I heard the drums like thunder, the sound of marching feet,
As men of ancient valor marched down our little street.

I heard the skirl of bagpipes, the blare of brasses bold,
As heroes from another time relived the days of old.
The old, the halt, the lame, the slow, they marched with solemn pace,
To honor comrades fallen at another time and place.

I felt the tightness in my throat, the tears that burned my eyes,
As I watched the quiet dignity of old men marching by.
The fine young men, and women too, in battles long ago,
Who gave their youth and some, their lives,to fight our country’s foe.

On this day will be remembered by comrades who remain,
And by the heavens, weeping, with softly falling rain.
The medals softly jingling on every passing chest,
In memory of companions who’ve long been laid to rest.

There are some unfit, and some who sit, in wheelchairs, row on row,
While they recall what price was paid to turn our country’s foe.
And some will stand with tear-dimmed eyes, and some with faces grim,
While all repeat the solemn vow,
    "WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."

Will be taking my girls to their first dawn service on Monday, they have one at our local memorial and this is the first time they have asked to go because they have been learning all about it in school before the holidays. At 10 and 8 I think they will actually understand the significance of it now.

The girls themselves have been collecting flowers this morning to make a wreath which they want to place on the memorial n memory of the fallen and for their great grandfather who fought in the pacific, my uncle who fought in Korea and my cousin who died last year whilst working as a clearance diver in Laos.

I'm the Parade Marshal for the Killarney RSL - the numbers of young people attending the Dawn Services has been increasing over the past ten years. I wish I could say it is only because of a better focus by the education system alone, but I think it may also be due to the fact that we have had troops in Afghanistan for over ten years now. That makes it the longest war we have ever been involved in!
ANZAC Day is not only about the veterans of past wars, but the current crop of military personnel as well. May their God keep them in the palm of his/her hand and return them safely home.

For the last couple of years, I have created the image that my children's school has used for the front cover of their memorial booklet for their ANZAC Day service (when the principal finds out you can desktop publish you get asked to do all sorts of stuff). I have always enjoyed creating something new each year. This year my eldest daughter Alyssa, who is 11 came up with the design and I love it, she did a fabulous job I think....

I love that the children spend time learning about ANZAC and all want to keep the memories and spirit alive.

Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you
