Default Jim's Mowing v's own business

    Hi all,
Wanting to start my own gardening/landscaping business but not sure where to start. Looked at Jim's and it seems okay apart from the ongoing fees. I see it as a foot in the door without the worry of looking for work.
Is there really that much work out there to the point where Jim's are knocking back jobs? I live in the Ringwood area. Any info will be much appreciated.

Had a look at the posts and it really doesn't look to good for Jims. Think I will read the manual when I get it and try and start something on weekend, sickies or days off. THanks for the info.

If u have made your decision solely from an independent forum (and any forum for that matter) then thats a silly decision . Go and do a day in the field with a Jim (which u will be offered) have a talk to a few Jims and Indies in your area.
But with the attitude u have already displayed I think u have made the right decision.

There are very definite pros and cons of franchise vs independant.

IF you feel that by joining a franchise you will not need to look for work you will likely be very disappointed. Depending on the division, some areas have a high number of unserviced leads. In others, too few leads to go around, with franchisees competing against each other for work.

Many Jim's guys are indeed 'living the dream', others struggle to keep head above water - the commitment to monthly franchise fees being the nail in the coffin for these businesses.

A key factor for most Jim's guys is the support of their franchisor. That being said, YOUR success is YOUR responsibility. Their obligation is to be a support, not build your business for you. Sadly it seems some would rather sell you a franchise than screen candidates they are convinced will succeed. This is not the model for everybody.

Due diligence - know your market in your area, speak with both the franchisees AND ex-franchisees of your region. Design a business plan. Read the other threads on the forum. Spend a day with a Jimmie - perhaps several with different Jimmies.

If you proceed, have enough saved to keep you afloat 12 months if things don't unfold as you had hoped. Possibly the NEIS may be available for you - then at least you have the equivalent of dole to help you for 12-24 months as you build your business.

Have I at times wished I hadn't signed up? Yes.
Will I be glad that I did in the future? Very possibly.
Knowing what I do now, would I join again? Perhaps not.

My observations from having been an indi, and now being a franchise owner, Jim's guys have a high committment level and are are usually more professional in presentation and in the way they operate right from the start. I believe their likelyhood of success is greater for the support of the network - however this is NOT a guarantee.

Speaking from being an ex Flower Power Garden Care Franchisee prospective, franchising has certainly left a bad taste in my mouth and I do not support the lawn mowing franchise model as its more about marketing ,siging people up and them leaving them to their own devices with little to no support or guidence and ultimatly failure despite the so called back up and i found it demoralising when before I was in charge of multi million dollar companys but could not make ends meet with a tin can lawn mowing and garden care franchise operation that broke me and run me into the ground..Been an Indie for 3 yrs now and have never looked back.
