    Boxing Day 8.50am

Sitting at the PC researching which new dishwasher to go out and buy in the next hr or so and me Iphone rings.

Well I stupidly decide to answer as it had the first 4 numbers in my area region, I was on guard is case it was a friend pranking.

Lady says can you come to my house today and mow my lawns and she lives at a remote country location called Talgarno Vic some 36kms away. It was a genuine call. Me said No Thankyou - politely.
Can you imagine ringing for electricain today to install an extra power point whilst his on a chartered 50 Bertram at Bermagui on holidays.

My fault, I was curious to see who was ringing.
    Cheers Garry

Thanks, I wanted the well rounded cnr model on the left.
But the misses choose the squarer edged full techo Bosch top of the range model at double of what I went out to get. They have such a different outlook to the pleasures of life.
Bugger me, I'm still measuring the outlay in how mows I'll have to do soon. May be I should have taken on that mow request today as it would of have to have been a very large rural estate.

Seriously our crappy F&P cracked it's top electronics panel some 5 yrs ago and it's been a dish rack and tea towel ever since. It was about time I did something to stay married beyond 2012.

    Paul,
My very elderly father is quite ill with cancer, but still living at his home two streets away. Bugger me, they have turned up out of nowhere and have been doing daily personal visits to get me old man to visit/join the KH.
I become aware by shear fluke by a random visit to see my father to tidy his front lawns. I was even told by them they were family friends to our inner family. Was not impressed.
Each to their own religions and faiths all the way, but to circle like a Eagle suddenly from out of the Dark has me full of anger.
    Cheers Garry

Makes you wonder where they are getting their information from Garry?

They are the absolute masters of doing that, A close friend of ours was an old retired navy guy with no family and they successfully got their hands on his savings after he passed away. The irony is that they don't believe in joining the armed forces. I don't have a problem with any religion but if anyone else tried to do that it would be called extorsion straight up, but because they are a church and supposedly a charity it's OK. No offence to any JW out there but im just telling the truth.

They don't turn up out of nowhere. There are organised, thorough, persistent, diligent and enthusiastic, but are not aggressive.
They seek people when they are home - It is improbable they attended anybody'd house before 9am - except perhaps during summer on those homes they have repeatedly had difficulties locating anybody during more regular times - or with prior arrangement with someone they have met before. Their return visits are with consent.

Fact - is is often during a change of circumstances (a death, illness, unemployment, new birth, relocation, etc..) that some are more likely to listen and respond than when fully occupied with a life they feel is going well.
It is most likely your freind, being elderly and most unwell and without family, was identified as someone who would benefit from a regular visit - and sincere personal interest would have been the motivator. In his condition, he may well have been looking for answers to meaningful questions - such as why are we here?, what is the purpose of life?, what happens when we die?, is this life all there is?, etc - and found the bible based responses given by the JWs were satisfying and helped him find peace. The Witnesses are not prejudiced like most in the community. Even with those who spent their life as part of organisations with activities the Witnesses' own conscience will not let them participate in, the Witnesses recognize that every man deserves to be treated with kindness and dignity - this alone moves some to respond favorably.

A charity? Nope! The organisation of Jehovah's Witnesses around the world are frequently first on hand to respond in times of natural disaster and provide ongoing support in the community.
While they are a Not-For-Profit religious organisation, Jehovah's Witnesses are NOT a charity as you assert.
While members are pleased to accept and forward modest contributions to assist in offsetting the costs of producing the literature, they have never solicited for donations. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of their activities are funded fully by the volunteer members themselves and not the public.
Extortion? On what basis do you make that claim? Without evidence to support such a claim it can be considered an off-the-cuff remark without substance.
If an individual chooses to will funds to an organisation or person (family or not) - that is their choice and their right - even as you might leave your assets or a portion to the local cattery or dog's home - which might in turn raise the eyre of family who disagreed.

David I can assure you they were knocking on the door here around 7.30am and this was Christmas Day of all days. I know that a requirement of their church is to preach the word through regular doorknocking. They have been repeatedly told when attending my home that I am not interested as I'm am happy and comfortable with my own faith and religion.

Agreed with much of what you stated in the full contents of your typing. The JW's can offer instant companionship and love to many lonely elderly.
But the elderly being lonely, possibly ill and may have lost a life time partner can be easily be influenced to rearrange their financial situations or wills whilst still able to appear able to do so in a solicitor's office. Plus solicitors belong to all faiths in life. My father has had nothing to do with Jw's for over 70 years and when he becomes quite ill and old they surface.
I have now have eyes in the back of head as when l had a brief kind conversation with the two, they mentioned my father's inheritence in conversation which stunned me as we were talking about nothing remotely related to that matter.

If this Grumpy thread shifts to a JW focus I will butt out as I've said what I need too.
    Cheers Garry
