I gave her cash (it's more fun to plug the cash in than use EFTPOS apparently). While she does this I wait out of the register area.

One of the items in today's shopping was a pack of 12 plastic knives. You know the sort that bend/break at a BBQ on a well done snag? Anyway the staff member comes running over to her and says she can't buy them. I come over and ask why not, she will be paying for the shopping and is not stealing anything.

    The answer.

    Seriously....

Legislation in Victoria to prevent the sale of controlled weapons (knives) to children under the age of 18, includes all types of knives...bread and butter and even plastic knives! Apparently they can be fined up to $2300 for doing so and have a store policy of asking for ID for anyone who looks under 25 and wants to purchase a humble bag of plastic knives.

    WTF?!?

Is it any wonder kids have trouble coping in the real world? So if you have a 17 year old off to the big smoke to go to uni, you will either have to purchase their cutlery for them or they'll have to live on Mac 'n' Cheese and tinned soup until they turn 18.

Lets not allow the stupidity to end there. Surely all plastic cutlery can be used as a weapon. You could take an eye out with a placcy fork...and don't get me started on sporks!

    Still shaking my head.
Thats because the people of Australia thats us me and you allow politicians to do as they wish .

Their views their thoughts their ways is what changes or adds
    Legislation not yours or mine.

There must be a website stating new and used Legislation wonder where it is.

Bikers are free to carry guns yet a kid cant buy a plastic knife .

Children and teens kill themselves because they have a mobile or the internet because some one said something bad about them or bullied them didnt need a plastic knife just a sharp toungue .

The general public are doing everything in its power to save life to bring freedom to their friends children and work mates yet politicians try and put us against each other .

Wicked people in high places allways has been allways will be .

Even in a country that has everything is controlled by a few a reforming of the laws and a revolution is required, now the trick is how to do it peacefully .lol

The world has changed so much since we were kids.. I remember being around 12 years old walking up the main street with my friend in our town heading for the bush to shoot rabits with a 22 rifle over my shoulder and neighbors yelling out "Bring Me Back A Rabit" LOL

That reminds me of when I went to my mates cattle station near Einasleigh N.Q. He slaughtered a cow and started cutting it up in front of his young daughters, they helped load the meat in to an esky, separated the guts etc and were literally hands on for the whole operation. I can't help thinking that these kids will grow up to be more mentally stable than some fat spoilt brat who spends all his/her spare time playing violent computer games or watching violent blood thirsty movies.

    Jo,

Correct on that one and BBQ Skewers could be next???

Was at coles for 33yrs and was a store mgr for 25yrs with the later yrs being a senior "Store of Excellence" store mgr who was responsible for his own store and training of others. For being a snr bloke they gave me the lucky additinal role of being a OH&S sponser covering 9 stores - what fun that was - not!
Our OH&S store manuals got so bad/complex and mega thick in volumes, that a team member had to to be trained and authorised to use a laminator with a Job Safe Practice Card adjacent to the laminator.
If the night cleaners plugged a powerful buffer machine into a power point and it tripped the safety fuse. Then only an electrician could flick it back. So what ever operated on that power line could not be used. So it could have no deli scales for early morning for example.
Staff where trained to lift and bend body parts like a robot. If they followed that rule, productivity would have been out the window and customers would have had fits laughing.
We had to carry all sorts of signage for law etc.
One such A4 sign we had was about cig's to minors and my front end service mgr couldn't fit it into the frame supplied. So she cut 3mm of the side to enable it to fit in without bowing. Internal Audit came one day and pinned us for it as it was now not A4 in size.

I could ramble for hrs and days on the various stuff, including the likes of shelf positioning of products classified as dangerous, but that would bore us all and give me a headache.
Prices, petrol, supplier trade pressure - brrrrrr and those self serve checkouts put staff out of work FULL STOP as when they get installed the store gets thousands of dollars of wages taken from their service budget weekly.

On a positive, I can't stop the amount of calls coming for peoples wanting lawns/gardens done. Word of mouth is out of control.
    Cheers Garry

Paul, the diary is booked solid for the next four weeks with sadly 3 weeks of that straight including weekends. The concentrated weekend stuff was due to commercial owners I have suddenly asking for special work on their other less known property interests.
Knocking back every new unknown caller, but decided to quote one from yesterday which will be done today. As they are extremely high profile people who sell heaps of your product up your way and internationally. He said I can't do my lawns/gardens whilst I sit on Jets travelling.
They want total garden/lawn care and for moment they said it was right, so I may fit it in starting late May. Always word of mouth or comment "saw your rig at such and such".
    Cheers Garry

Yes so true Gazza but the problem is people do things by rote because they have to. When I was building the Revlon stands in the big stores like KMart and Big W we had to do induction cards for each one. Everyone I took with me had to have one. You had to show it at the store or no entry. Then in places like Center point you had to do another induction card to even get in the building. It was totally overboard. The big thing was no one checked or even cared. I used to do the card for all new staff I had because it was easier for me to do it. Had to go to Port Lincoln once and the cards had expired a week before so did new ones but had mistakenly taken the old ones. Explained to store manager what had happened. Could I get them faxed over. No you need the originals. Well can you check on your system because I just renewed them. No we don't do that. So I spat the dummy and told them to jam it where the sun dont shine and build their own bloody stand as I was going home. Went and had a coffee and a half hour later got a call to go and see the store and they would let me in. Totally mindless crap it was. The world is becoming OHS bound because stupid people make stupid mistakes and everyone is treated the same.

Sorry but it annoys me no end.

Can relate to every word typed above.

I got sent to Victoria's largest Bilo in $$ turnover to convert it coles some years back now. Some tradies had travelled 320ks to get there to assist with the conversion and were due to start at store closure time, ie 22.00
Had to turn them away when they arrived with no induction card, but the team was authorised to accept a faxed copy to be sent to the store. I had a ex highly dedicated OH&S Trainer positioned in my store, so many things had to go by the book or someone higher would find out. Plus Audit were always checking all procedures. A bad audit was very career shortening to a Store Mgr.
Byjingoes, I can feel a headache coming on typing and remembering all the stuff we had to do.
Been out the shed tonight with the log fire going servicing my Turfmaster 530 re S/Plug, air filter clean, and a new spring modification on the height adjuster lever as it slip out a couple of times today in the wet. Guess wha,t no headache doing that over a coldie.

    Paul, as per PM.
Sadly I knocked the above job back as it was a big job that l would have really enjoyed to do as I don't really have the time to fit it in. So called another Indy mate who was nearby to pass the job onto. The potential client was rapped that I walked another Indy over the property and recommended him highly to fill me shoes.

I was once subb'd (just the mowing) to a gardener who looked after a petrol station. I didnt have to do much except sign in and wear a cr@ppy/dull reflective vest. Thing was, I wear fluro green shirts. My shirt was way more visible than the vest. I told them this but they didnt want to know! Crazy!
