Yeah hair dryer! Hair's getting long, thick and curly again. Take's forever to dry in this cold weather and I was rushing to leave to get to Brisbane. A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do! ROFL.

On the upside, after the visit to the specialist in Bris today, not a lot has changed unfortunately but a couple of aspects of my illness are a little better than previously so that's something I guess.

Paul look on the bright side at least you still have enough hair to bother with a hair dryer

I travelled to Sydney yesterday to see a specialist about my hips , got to have some more tests before he will operate on my left hip, so that wont be till at least August then I have to get over that before he will do my right one, it's not hip replacement surgery but hip arthroscopy. Great news eh, got in the car to drive home at 4.30pm it poured all the way dont think I hit 100kms all the way. So today I am home sick with the flu and still in pain that makes me more than grumpy I am pissed off

I can understand your anger Cranbourne and your son must be so disappointed and angry too.

Did he get a false positive on a drug test or have they based that decision on disclosure of the type of medication?

Acne meds are commonly steroid based and so can result in a positive on a drug test, their potential side effects may also be on their no-go list

I know a friend in the US has her son initially rejected by the marine corp because he had acne. Severe acne was a medical condition that they believed warranted rejection of the application because if on the shoulders/neck/back would interfere with the wearing of military equipment and pose a threat of severe infection in the sometimes filthy conditions they live in. Also he was taking a steroid based medication for it's treatment and had to wait 2 months or something like that after the treatment ceased before he could re-apply. He eventually was accepted and has just got back from his second stint in Afghanistan.

With any luck you son will be able to apply again.

this dose happen joanne refer steroids and drug tests , a bloke i used to drive with his son was rejected from the army for severe acne , as it was classed as open skin or some thing wich could forward him to air born infection , , after a long disscusion and a few doctors visits the army helped changed his medication etc and he was in = that was about 8 / 10 years ago ... dont give up cranbourne ,

if he's on Roaccutane he should be able to reapply after he's finished a friends son was on this and is currently in the army he's 19

also one of the side effects of this is
    Photosensitivity
During isotretinoin treatment is not the time to work on your tan! Isotretinoin can cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun, or photosensitivity. You'll be more susceptible to sun burn and sun damage.
While using this drug, you should wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, every day, even if you don't typically burn. You'll also want to stay out of tanning beds and booths.
    ref: http://acne.about.com/od/acnetreatme...ideEffects.htm
so if he is on this medication they would be restricted in where and what duties they could position him in

ok. The medication he is on is minomycin. The warning on it says it MAY cause mental alertness problems which he has never had a problem with. He can appeal the disision and then reapply. Who knows how long that process could take? I cant believe the nurse that he had to deal with for the medical didn't ask any questions when he told her about the meds he is taking. Its not like he has severe acne, he just had a lot of pimples on his chin that made him self concious.

What a joke. Takes them 5 mins to knock him back yet will take him another 6 months to get another disicion when all they had to do was ask a couple more questions.

Hmmmmm my wife and son wont let me ring them tomorrow.............

Probably best you don't just yet.

I know it's not what you want to hear but they have to be so careful. They don't know who is going to get what side effect and a problem with mental alertness can mean life and death for a soldier.

At least he can appeal which is much better than a blanket no and don't bother coming back. Perhaps a letter or report from his doctor?

Sorry to hear that Cranbourne. But getting angry at it is the last thing that will help him. Dont blame the nurse she is not the one making the decisions. The Defence Force have to have standards and the last thing they want is a serviceman who cannot do the job due to a medical issue. Trust me mate there are enough people already in the forces doing that. What he needs to do is find out exactly what needs to be done to allow him to reapply or even if he can reapply. Then he has to work on that. Plenty of ppl dont get in on thier first go. I feel for him but dont let him get disheartened. Help him along and I am sure with the right advice and some perseverance he will get in.

My daughter would dearly love to get in the forces but they knocked her back because she has a minor heart condition. It skips a beat every now and then. She is a fit as a fiddlle and has the right attitude but she ran into a brick wall. She has no chance of reapplying. Unfortuantely thats the way it is some times.

What does annoy me though is you see some who actually make it in but don't want to be there and you have people like your young bloke and my daughter who would give anything to be there. Figure that one out.
    Cheers
