thats weird, cos if i had to nominate why my business was successful, its BECAUSE of marketing, then sales procedures, and only THEN about the actual job done.

Too true. I was a area manager with VIP mowing and it was very obvious that the guys who where good at marketing themselves were very successful. Your best tool of trade is being able to sell yourself.

i prefer the guys that do a really good job but are crap at marketing i think these guys are much better for my business as i get to keep their clients when they give it away due to lack of income

In my pest control days (1988-2003)..t'was like this,... watch the others, be staright with folk, do not overcharge, do a REALLY good job even if you under quoted, have presentation and reasonable vehicle, chuck in some freebies, ring back in 2-3 weeks to see if they are satisfied with results, find an advertising medium that gets results and stick with it, be enthusiastic but not over the top. 15 jobs in pest control at 120 bucks is better than 8 jobs at 90 bucks, these days general treatments are 160 +, but at my age i'm not crawling round roofs and subfloors anymore, so 80% of income is gone. Young blokes job i think. A mate of mine said that the lawnmowing and yard clean ups was a better thing than stuffing around with chemicals and all the reg's nowdays, just an opinion from me but i hold my general feelings to doing it right and keeping quiet.

charities.....this week I've got a few letters from different charities (and I use the term loosely) from groups I've never heard of, but with very similar names to the "name" charities. Now, what p1sses me off is the packaging including cards, envelopes, note-books, enveleope stickers... all with my name and address on them. How much of their "income" is going where we are told? Before you shoot me down, I have donated $45 a month to a, what I consider, a proper, accountable charity for the last 20 years (and don't claim for as that seems a bit abhorrent/pointless to me IMO)

Good on you Paul... I help my Hindu Balinese family directly that's my charity. The small amount I give makes a big difference to their lives..

gave the ute a service today - intended replacing the fuel filter but it is such an involved procedure (fuel injected, high pressure blah blah), decided that Ultratune can do it when I finally get around to a tune-up. So, moving along to changing the coolant - drain it, remove thermostat and flush it all, install new coolant and add water.... I forgot to turn on the heater so don't know if there is enough/too much fluid

Not to worry too much, coolant is cheap, do it in 1-2 months, clean as a whistle.
