Isn't it more or less a nut with a lever on the side?
I think Makita should receive bad reviews in the hedge trimming section. I won't buy another one if they rip-off customers. I think they would generate a lot of sales from reviews on this site. Come to think of it I haven't used it in more than a year as the shindi has a superior head adjustment system and the maruyama is a beast that slices anything.
I had an issue where that same clamp lever snapped off the screw thing that holds it on, if that makes any sense. I now carry that lever in your pic in my toolbox and have to keep it in my pocket in order to be able to adjust the hedger angle. The teeth are also a bit dodgy as they are very fine and soft and when they fill with gunk wouldn't take long to be stripped. Gotta try and keep those teeth clean. The cost of a new hedger attachment is around $299 from memory. I'd be tempted to dodgy something up or buy a new one as a spare. Let us know how you go. I have another issue that has been bugging me. The hole on the alloy shaft that you secure one of the hex head screws to hold on the head/trimmer/saw into is getting bigger. Anyone else have that issue and know what is causing it.
Maruyama only have one pole hedger, but there is a choice of bar length. My shindi bar gaps weren't set right, so we would always pick up the maru first as it will cut through anything in one swipe. Have to see how they compare now I've adjusted the shindi... Weight and vibration is more of an issue now as I met a contractor who did lots of hedging and now he is disabled because of HAVS. First thing I would do is compare vibration ratings, particularly what is on the front handle. Husqvarna might be leading the pack.
will probably get a new one soon anyway, its certainly paid for itself a thousand times over - l went with mak as they are so reliable (robin engine) and light weight

your an ideas man. I like it.
That's what I would have done too, but would have used a roll pin instead.
I could be posting this in the happy thread, even depression section some time in the future but at the moment it's here. After a rough 12 months or so the wife moved out yesterday. Have got quite a bit of thinking to do!!!
