    reminds me of a joke.

A vacationing penguin is driving his car through Arizona when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.

After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal."

"No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."

chainsaw oil pumps. Got 3 chainsaws, the first one pumps out no oil at all. The 2nd one pumps too much oil, and leaks like buggery when not in use. The 3rd one, my brand newishish Sthil cordless has now also stopped oiling.

(on a Stihl), check that the intake filter in the oiltank is clean, and also check that the air intake valve on the tank is clean. It often looks like a disk about 6mm in diam with small hole in centre and is near the bar mount. It contains a small spring loaded ball which acts as a valve to let air into oil tank as oil is pumped out.
If it's blocked (closed), air can't get in & oil flow will stop. If it is stuck open with a bit of crud, sawdust etc, air will get in all the time and saw will leak oil all the time. Clean by flushing with petrol & compressed air. Stihl service man describes some tests to diagnose oiling probs.

If it's not a Stihl, I don't know the detail of how they should work.

Thanks Joe, didn't know there was an air valve. What I did the first time this happened was to blow compressed air through the oil intake pipe (the filter was clean as this machine is only a few months old). I then blew air through the oil exit port. That seemed to work, probably a fluke though as I don't think the oil pump lets air through does it? Won't work this time though and the dealer's mechanic is away so i'd have to wait 3 weeks at least for them to look at it. Is there a way to blow air through that air valve at all? The one I really need to work is the Sthil cordless.

    Steven,
I just flushed it with petrol and air.
You can remove the valve -- it pushes in & I think man says use a 6mm rod (possibly thru oil tank).
I have a feeling that I posted the relevant man pages in a reply to one of the forums here a year or more ago.
Have a search. Otherwise pm me with your email address and I can email you the pages from the Stihl manual (the ones I have won't cover your new saw), but prob same principles apply.

ended up taking it to another Sthil dealer. They reckon the problem was caused by the feeder pipe coming off the oil pump side. Can't understand how that would happen but happy they found it anyway.

bugger, your having a bad run by the sounds of it. Usually happens in 3's. Didn't you do the power steering hose recently? One more to go.

This is serious and you should get to hospital emergency or eye specialist WITHOUT DELAY and will probably be able to repair with much less chance of longterm damages. My brother in law who lives in country WA suffered one and was not diagnosed by his optician, but was picked up by doc in local hosp emergency when vision was getting worse after several days. Told to get to the main hosp in Perth pronto where eye surgeon saw him immediately and told him that fix would be much more difficult (no guarantee of success) with such a long delay. Too far gone for laser 'stitching', so he used a (then) experimental method of partly filling inside of eyeball with an oil to hold the detached flap back in place & patient had to sit around for several weeks with head down. It apparently worked and about 3 months later Frank had the oil removed. Final result was vision was not lost in eye (initially thought to be a strong possibility) and with some new (stronger) glasses, his vision in that eye is about same as before the detached retina.
Take home message from his eye surgeon was in case of suspected detached retina (which appears like a blind being partly pulled down in your vision) get to eye specialist asap. -- it is a very serious eye condition!

Yes I agree. Dont muck around with your eyes. Maybe see a doctor first as you may need a referral anyway.
