It is so easy to accidentally wander above the speed limit and not realise it. If the police and government are serious about reducing the road toll then why can you still buy a car that will do more than 100kph ?

Answer : Because the police and government would miss out on millions of dollars of revenue each year if it was impossible to speed.

They would be better off to fix up some of the "patched up goat tracks" that they call roads to reduce the road toll.

Can't remember if I saw it on here or somewhere else but I know I've seen it in my local paper - hiding them in specially constructed wheelie bins now with a special small cutout panel.

We have been real lucky up here before you cross a fixed speed camera there is a warning sign and there is only a handful , speed cameras are usually a Toyota land cruiser of a Mercedes van parked on the footpath sticking out like dog balls with a warning sign out front.

I believe that covert cameras are starting to be used though

Here they used to have a Commodore wagon with a piece of PVC pipe on the roofrack

Speed cameras (in Qld at least) are only meant to be deployed at known "black spots". In the 26 years I have lived at my current address, there's been one (non-fatal) accident at the intersection of my street and the highway. Two or three times a month there is a camera car (usually a Nissan Patrol) set up there, with his "Speed camera" sign one to two metres in front of the car, facing across the road (both incorrect as per their instruction manual). The road is 4 lanes wide. Any photos taken from that vehicle would be null and void IF you decided to fight it. They rely on people simply paying up to keep the revenue flowing.
The majority of fatal car crashes occur below the posted speed limit. When the police study the crash site, they look for skid marks. If they find any, the report states that speed played a part in the accident.

For example; a car pulls out of a driveway in front of a semi travelling at 40 k's. The semi driver locks up the brakes, but cannot avoid the car, and hits it, killing, or seriously injuring the car driver. Because there are skid marks, the officer investigating will tick the box marked "Was the speed of either vehicle a contributing factor?"
The accident report now adds to the statistics, showing speed as a contributing factor in another death/injury on the roads, even though neither vehicle was travelling at, or over, the posted speed limit.

If travelling a couple of k's over the limit in otherwise good conditions was as dangerous as they would have you believe, then the road toll should be in the hundreds of thousands each year.

Inappropriate speed is a killer! Along with distractions (phones, texting, scantily clad women, etc).

Agree but I will play devils advocate. Who determines what is inappropriate. It is 10 k over or 15 k or 20 k. Then the minute you set something like that people will push it to the limit so if you set the level at 20 k over people will do 80K in a 60 K zone because they can and they know they won't get booked. Whatever limit you have people will push it and then complain when they get pinged going over it. The only way for people not to complain is have no limits at all

A limit is just that - you can travel at 10, 5 or 2km below the limit, but a mindset that aims to travel AT the speed limit will likely go over at times and eventually get 'pinged'.

The speed limit is only appropriate when road conditions are good. In the wet, at night, strong wind or heavy traffic, the maximum safe speed is likely less than the speed limit

    Agreed John
Fixed cameras are nothing but revenue raisers and before anyone starts I've had one ticket in 26yrs behind the wheel.I just don't see them as an answer to the road toll, better driver training YES but not cameras.

i remember when i 1st got my license if you travelled at 60 in a 60 zone you would get tailgated and abused as people just expected everyone to go at about 65-70 because the police wouldn't book you now with more accurate speed detection you run the risk and most people seem to stick closer to the limit and remember it is set as a limit not a guide
Anything Ian says may or may not be garbage, it may also be his own opinion or it may not be his opinion at all, it may just be something he felt like stating anyone following his advice does so at their own risk and may be doing something Ian would actually advise against.
And if you don't like what Ian has to say use the ignore function if you don't know how ask i will gladly tell you

Now I will really get it going!! Everyone makes choices in life. I often choose to go with the flow of traffic - much of it seems to be 5-10 k's over the limit - but by doing so I avoid the tailgaters, people cutting in & out of lanes & braking hard in front of you etc. Often when you check the limit thinking it was 80 it all of a sudden becomes 70 then 30 secs later again 80 and so on!! Cant stay in the left hand lane because thats where people seem to want to overtake because they are so frustrated with that 1 or 2 people in the right lane scared to overtake (in case they go 3 k's over the limit) & move left. If you check the % of fines for under 10k's over the limit you may find it is something like 80% of the total fines. (OR AT LEAST A VERY HIGH %) Any fine I have had for speeding was for doing under 10k's above the limit. sorry officer

so john your saying you often choose to break the law and speed and then when you get caught it makes you grumpy all i'm suggesting is if you don't break the law you may be less grumpy
